The dazzling flowers of these Drummond's phlox or Phlox drummondii Summer Showers Mix come in a vast array of summer colours. These very original flowers feature white star-shaped centres. This rather low-growing, bushy variety is an undemanding and deliciously fragrant annual that attracts butterflies. From summer to autumn, this mixture will liven up flowerbeds, borders and flower tubs. Grow in rich, moist, well-drained soil in the sun.
Drummond's Phlox a plant of the Polemoniaceae family that originates from North America (Texas). This herbaceous annual plant forms a small bushy, erect clumps that measure 35 cm in height and 15 cm in width. Its foliage is bright green. Its leaves are simple, opposite and directly attached to the stems. Flowering takes place from July to October, sometimes lasting until the first frosts. The flowers of this phlox are about 2 centimetres in diameter and look like stars. They are made up of 5 (or even 6) petals and are gathered into very dense clusters. The flowers come in a variety of colours, ranging from white to red and that include yellow, salmon, orange and purple. All are illuminated by white streaked centres. The flowers produce small, dark seeds that self-seed easily.
'Summer Shower' phloxes form vibrant carpets in flower beds and borders. They should be sown directly and densely enough to produce a stunning kaleidoscope of colours. They also thrive well in tubs. The diversity of their colours may make them difficult to associate with the rest of the garden, but they can be used in the border of a bed for one season or used as a decoration for the balcony or patio.

Botanical data
Sow Phlox drummondii seeds from late winter to early summer at a depth of 1.5 mm, in good soil. Make sure that the soil is moist but not soggy and seal within in a polythene bag. Keep in the dark until germination which usually takes 10-21 days at 18-20 °C. Make sure that the soil stays moist. Prick out the seedlings in 8 cm pots, when they are large enough to be handled. Pinch the tips of the plants at a height of 7-8 cm to encourage a bushy growth habit. Plant out later, spacing the seedlings 23 cm apart. Choose a spot with rich, well-drained soil and exposed to full sun. These annual phlox can also be sown directly outdoors in the spring.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
