Portulaca grandiflora Double Mix Seeds - Moss rose
Portulaca grandiflora Double Mix Seeds - Moss rose
Portulaca grandiflora
Moss-rose purslane - Eleven o'clock - Mexican rose - Sun rose - Rock rose
I am satisfied with the careful and rather quick delivery of my large seed order. The explanatory sheets are a very interesting added bonus. And I would like to thank your team for promptly and unconditionally rectifying a small oversight of a seed packet (dwarf nasturtium). The sowing of purslane has been done and for now, everything is looking very good, its growth is progressing.

Description
Native to South America, Portulaca grandiflora Double Mix, also called Moss Rose, is small annual plant that is a real sun and heat enthusiast. It is particularly resistant to drought, as evidenced by its succulent foliage. In summer, this stocky plant tirelessly produces large, generally double, open flowers in bright shades of yellow, pink, red and orange, which only open in the sun. Easy to germinate, these flowers are ideal as ground cover or in rock gardens.
This variety of moss rose belongs to the family Portulaceae and is widespread in the semi-arid areas of Argentina, southern Brazil and Uruguay. This annual plant is one of the few that are succulent. It forms small prostrate clumps that measure no more than 20 cm high and 15 cm wide. Its reddish stems bear small pearl-like leaves, which are lanceolate, fleshy and of a bright green hue. Flowering takes place throughout the summer. Its large flowers are 5 cm in diameter, widely open, very double and are made up of many silky, ruffled petals that come in a variety of bright colours. They require full sunshine and well-drained soil in order to thrive.
Sow Eleven o'clock in rock gardens, borders or pots. Planted In large masses or in small touches, this frugal and cheerful plant will liven up any sunny corner without requiring much attention. This creeping plant is a good ground cover that should be placed in flowerbeds in the company of drought resistant plants such as dwarf sagebrush, love-in-a-mist, thyme, California poppies and stonecrop.

Planting and care
Portulaca grandiflora Double Mix seeds germinate easily. 3 techniques are possible. It is advisable to try at least two of them in case one of them doesn't work. As the seeds are very fine, mix them with sand before sowing.
1- In March, sow in a frost-free frame in 10 cm pots. The plants are then placed directly in their final positions without disturbing the roots, as soon as all risk of frost has passed.
2- In April-May, sow in a tray placed in a heated frame. Growth is rapid. The plants need to be pricked out when they are very young, in individual pots and then in the ground outside. This method is quicker but transplanting is a bit stressful for the plant. The fully developed moss rose already does not like its roots to be disturbed.
3- Sow directly in May, in their final positions in a warm spot in well watered soil that has been cleared of weeds. The fine seeds should not be covered. Small seedlings that have been sown too densely can be transplanted if necessary. Sowing allows you to obtain a large number of plants and to renew your annuals from one year to the next, provided that you remember to harvest the seeds. The seeds of the double flowers allow to faithfully reproduce the same variety.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
