This golden basket is a small, carpeting perennial with silvery-grey foliage that becomes covered in countless honey-fragrant, golden-yellow flowers in spring. It quickly forms a dense, compact cushion, ideal for rock gardens, the top of a low wall, or a very sunny border. Very hardy and undemanding, this alpine plant thrives in poor, well-drained soils, from neutral to lime-bearing. Sow in spring, either directly in the ground or in a seed tray.

Description

Alyssum montanum 'Berggold' MOUNTAIN GOLD is a trailing rock garden perennial that becomes covered in golden yellow fragrant flowers in spring. This selection of mountain alyssum forms low cushions of silvery-grey foliage, which are very decorative even outside the flowering period. Extremely hardy and suited to dry soils, it is suitable for mountain gardens as well as dry and Mediterranean gardens. Its nectar-rich flowering attracts many pollinating insects.

The type species, Alyssum montanum, belongs to the Brassicaceae family. It is known by the common names mountain alyssum, mountain madwort, sometimes mountain gold basket or mountain pepperweed. In the wild, it colonises rocky grass, calcareous scree, alpine moraines and sunny old walls in the limestone massifs of France, Switzerland and south-western Germany.
The cultivar offered is a horticultural creation, named Alyssum montanum 'Berggold', whose trade name MOUNTAIN GOLD is widely used in nurseries. The synonym Aurinia montanum 'Berggold' is also encountered. It is a perennial that forms a dense cushion 10 to 15cm tall and 30 to 50cm wide. The stems are thin, spreading or slightly trailing, arising from a short, branched base. The foliage is evergreen or semi-evergreen depending on the climate. It consists of small, spatulate to obovate, grey-green to silvery leaves covered with a fine down that gives them a silky appearance, measuring 1 to 3cm long. The plant establishes fairly quickly from sowing and spreads via numerous short branches; it self-seeds readily around the clump.
Flowering occurs from late April to June, sometimes into July. The bright yellow flowers have four petals arranged in a cross in small clusters 2 to 3cm in diameter. The flowers are slightly fragrant, with a honey note clearly perceptible in mild weather. The plant is nectar-rich and loved by bees, hoverflies and other insects.
Recently, trials on green roofs have shown that mountain alyssum persists well thanks to its abundant self-seeding, which explains its regular presence in plant palettes for dry roofs and terraces.

In the garden, Alyssum 'Berggold' Mountain Gold can be used as a small golden carpet in poor, sunny soils. Plant it on top of low walls, on dry banks, in rock gardens or at the edge of borders. You can pair it with pastel spring blooms such as Phlox subulata 'Candy Stripes', or with the white carpets of Iberis sempervirens 'Snowflake'. The foliage of Blue Fescue 'Elijah Blue' and Sedum 'Dragon's Blood', blue and purple respectively, provides contrast.

Planting and care

Sow Alyssum montanum Mountain Gold seeds in spring, from March to May, in a seed tray or directly in the ground in light, well-drained soil, in full sun.
In pots or seed trays, use a fine mix based on seed compost and sand, press down lightly, barely cover the seeds, then keep the substrate just moist until germination, which usually occurs in two to three weeks depending on the temperature.
Ventilate well to avoid excess moisture and place the young plants in bright light, without scorching sun. 
When the seedlings have 3–4 leaves, transplant them into individual pots or thin out the sowings in open ground to leave only one plant every 20 to 25cm.
Plant in their final position once all risk of hard frost has passed, in a poor to moderately fertile soil, preferably chalky or neutral, and above all very well-draining.
Water regularly during the first season to encourage rooting, then only in prolonged drought; too much water is more harmful than too little. No fertiliser is necessary; this small perennial prefers poor soils.
Remove any spontaneous seedlings if the plant self-seeds too much. In well-drained soil, simply cleaning off the dead parts at the end of winter is sufficient for routine care.
