Description

Amaranthus caudatus Coral Fountain, also known as Fox Tail Amaranth, is a very elegant variety with beautiful trailing panicles in a stunning colour that evolves from a deep, muted red to a soft coral pink. It is beautiful in the garden and also makes lovely fresh cut flowers and dried flowers. In addition to its ornamental qualities, its delicious seeds are rich in protein. Sow this remarkable annual directly in place in April and May for flowering from July to September.

Amaranthus caudatus, also known as Love-Lies-Bleeding, belongs to the Amaranthaceae family. This amaranth is native to tropical regions of South America, particularly Peru, and is widely cultivated worldwide for its unique beauty. It often reaches a height of 60 to 90 centimetres, taller under optimal growing conditions. It is distinguished by its long, trailing inflorescences that resemble fox tails, hence its common name. These inflorescences can measure up to 30 centimetres long and are composed of small, colourful flowers ranging from bright red to deep purple.

The Coral Fountain Amaranthus reaches a height of 1.10 meters or even up to 1.50 metres under optimal conditions. It has an upright and highly branched habit. The plant has lanceolate, alternate, matte green leaves with strongly marked veins. The flowers are grouped in trailing clusters, forming spectacular inflorescences in long, trailing panicles that can measure up to 20 to 25 cm long. They have a beautiful colour that evolves throughout the season from dark red to coral pink.

The Fox Tail Amaranth is often used for decorative purposes in gardens or floral arrangements. Its trailing inflorescences add an exotic and elegant touch to floral compositions. In addition, its edible seeds can be used in cooking, particularly for cereal preparations. Its nutritional qualities are also remarkable: the protein, calcium, and vitamins contained in these tiny seeds make them a popular food for vegetarians. The Coral Fountain Amaranthus should be positioned in full sun and sheltered from the wind in well-drained and moist soil, alongside other cutting flowers, and can be combined in beautiful bouquets with Dahlias, Zinnias, or Cosmos.

Planting and care

The seeds of Amaranths are tiny and light. Sow directly into the ground from April to May at 16°C and lightly cover with compost for beautiful flowers from July to September. Thin out as soon as the plants have two leaves and then transplant at least every 30 cm. The germination period is 21 days.

Sow finely, at a depth of 3 mm at the bottom of small furrows spaced 30 cm apart, in soil which is well-worked and loosened to a depth of 30 cm. Regularly water to maintain a certain level of humidity, especially during dry periods. You can also sow in pots or containers filled with moist seed compost, covering the seeds with a very small pinch of compost or vermiculite. Keep between 20 and 25°C. Light promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist, but not waterlogged. Transplant the young plants into 7.5 cm pots or containers. Plant outside once all risk of frost has passed.

Fox-tail amaranths are heat-loving plants that thrive in nitrogen-rich soil. Plant them in full sun, in light and well-amended soil. Just before the first frost, you can uproot the plants and burn them to prevent being overrun by spontaneous seedlings.
