This hybrid variety is distinguished by its long, rigid spikes covered in coral-orange flowers, tinged with yellow and pink, which are very bright in borders as well as in cut flower arrangements. This tall, fast-growing snapdragon is superb in a vase, in rows for cutting, or at the back of borders. Sow under cover from March, in warmth. It is not very hardy, so often grown as an annual and flowers generously from June to September if the spent spikes are regularly removed.

Description

Snapdragon F1 Potomac Orange is a tall hybrid selected for cut flower production. Its long, very straight flowering stems bear spikes filled with coral orange flowers, warmed by a yellow heart and pinkish highlights, which add great depth to cut flower arrangements. The Potomac™ series, developed for professionals, is very uniform, regular in its flowering and reliable even during the long, hot summer days. In the ornamental garden or cut flower garden, it adds height, a beautiful palette of warm tones and nectar for bees.

The large-flowered snapdragon Antirrhinum majus belongs to the Plantaginaceae family. The species is known by several common names: snapdragon, common snapdragon, and large-flowered snapdragon, referring to the flower, which opens like a little mouth when pinched. Native to the western Mediterranean basin, it grows spontaneously on cliffs, dry walls and rockeries, where it behaves as a perennial or short-lived small undershrub. In gardens, however, it is most often cultivated as an annual or a biennial, as it does not tolerate frosts below –5/–7 °C.
The Potomac™ series comprises F1 hybrids of tall growth, selected for their very long, perfectly straight stems, their clustered flowering and their good vase life. Potomac Orange is characterised by an erect, tight clump habit: a rosette of medium green leaves forms first at the base, then several upright flowering stems develop, each topped by a compact spike. In open ground, the plant reaches 90 to 120 cm in height with a spread of 25 to 30 cm, and its flowering stems can lengthen up to 1.50 m in deep, rich soil. Growth is rapid, with approximately 100 days between sowing and the first flowers.
The inflorescences are elongated, very dense terminal clusters, where large, 3 to 4 cm long flowers gradually open. The corolla has two fleshy "lips"; in Potomac Orange, the tones range from apricot orange to deep coral orange, sometimes tinged with pink in bud, with a golden yellow throat that brightens the whole. The flowers are slightly fragrant, with a sweet scent typical of snapdragons, and very nectar-rich: they are particularly attractive to bumblebees. Flowering lasts from June until early autumn if the spent stems are regularly pruned.

Snapdragon F1 Potomac Orange naturally finds a place in the cut flower bed, planted in tight rows. Its tall, narrow silhouette works well at the back of a border, particularly in cottage gardens and ornamental kitchen gardens. Its coral-orange spikes can be paired with unusual zinnias like ‘Queeny Lime Orange’, soft-toned cosmos such as ‘Apricot Lemonade’, single red or burgundy dahlias like ‘Bishop of Llandaff’, the snapdragon 'Madame Butterfly F1 Bronze', or ammis (Ammi majus) to add lightness and a beautiful white contrast.

Please note, these seeds are reserved for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow Antirrhinum majus F1 Potomac Orange seeds from March to May on the surface of a well-drained seed compost. Do not cover the seeds, as light aids germination. Place your tray or seed box in a propagator or plastic bag, maintaining an ideal temperature of 20-24°C until germination, which usually takes 7 to 14 days.
Transplant the seedlings when they are large enough to handle into 8 cm pots or containers. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting them out in the open ground, after all risk of frost has passed, spacing them 25 to 30 cm apart.

Snapdragons thrive in fertile, well-drained, well-worked soil and in full sun. The common snapdragon is not very hardy (-6°C), so it is often grown as an annual or biennial. However, it is not uncommon for snapdragons to survive several not-too-severe winters, but they then become more susceptible to rust...
To try and preserve a beautiful variety, protect the plants from severe frosts in winter by ensuring good soil drainage and covering the crowns with a thick carpet of leaves or dry grass: they will regrow in spring and then flower earlier.
