Description
Aster alpinus 'White Beauty' is a selection of the Alpine Aster with luminous white flowers. This small, very hardy alpine perennial forms low cushions that become covered in miniature daisies in spring and early summer. Compact, understated, and low-maintenance, it easily finds a place in rock gardens, borders, and sunny banks. Its flowers are rich in pollen and nectar, attract pollinators and bring a fresh, natural touch to the garden.
Aster alpinus belongs to the Asteraceae family. It is a perennial from the mountains of Europe and temperate Asia. It grows naturally in rocky grassland, dry meadows, and well-drained escarpments, often on calcareous soils, at medium to high altitudes. It overwinters as a rosette at ground level.
The cultivar 'White Beauty' is a horticultural form with white flowers belonging to the Albus group. The plant forms a dense clump; its roots have short, thick underground stems that resemble small rhizomes. It is not invasive: the tight rosettes remain clustered and slowly widen around the base. The erect flowering stems reach 15 to 25cm in height. The basal leaves, arranged in a rosette, are spatulate to lanceolate, thick, medium to dark green, and slightly hairy. The stem leaves (cauline) are narrower, linear to lanceolate, and arranged alternately along the stems. Each stem bears a solitary, 3 to 5 cm diameter head. As with all Asteraceae, the inflorescence consists of a crown of white ligulate flowers surrounding a disc of small, bright yellow tubular flowers. Flowering occurs from May to June, sometimes extending into July depending on the weather or altitude. A slight repeat flowering is possible if faded flowers are removed. The heads are honey-producing. The plant produces small dry fruits, achenes topped with a silky egret, allowing partial dispersal by the wind.
Aster alpinus 'White Beauty' is a short-lived perennial. Its presence can be maintained by re-sowing or dividing the clumps every 3 to 4 years. From sowing, it takes one year to obtain flowering plants, then 2 to 3 years for the cushion to reach its maximum dimensions.
The Alpine Aster 'White Beauty' is mainly used as a rock garden perennial and low border plant. It can be tucked between stones, along a staircase, at the top of a low wall, at the edge of a border, or in a pot on a sunny terrace. Its white flowering accompanies the blue-violet cushions of a Campanula portenschlagiana 'Resholt Variety', the deep pink carpets of Phlox subulata 'Atropurpurea', or the carmine pom-poms of Armeria maritima 'Splendens'. For contrast, add a Sedum kamtschaticum 'Variegatum', with its variegated foliage and yellow flowers. These low perennials create very floriferous, easy-care scenes perfect for hot, stony areas of the garden.

Planting and care
Sow the Alpine Aster 'White Beauty' from February-March to May under cover in a bright location, or from August to September outdoors, in very light, well-drained potting compost mixed with a little sand. Scatter the seeds on the surface of the levelled substrate, gently firm them down, then barely cover them with a maximum of 1 to 2mm of potting compost, as they need light to germinate well. Water with a very fine spray to avoid burying them, and keep the mix just moist, never waterlogged, at a temperature around 15–18 °C.
Germination occurs in 2 to 4 weeks; prick out the young plants into pots as soon as they are large enough to handle, spacing them out, then plant them out in the garden the following spring or in autumn, in well-drained soil and full sun.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
