Description
The mix of Callistephus chinensis Surpresso brings together several varieties of medium-sized China Aster, producing single flowers of varied colours that last a long time in the garden and as cut flowers. Their mid-early flowering offers an abundance of large golden yellow-headed capitula borne on straight and sturdy stems. The flowers are of a good size and come in superb colours, ranging from pinks, reds, purples, and whites. These annual plants are easy to grow. They can be sown under glass or directly in open ground, in a sunny position, in fertile and well-drained soil.
Chinese Aster, also known as Callistephus chinensis, is a Chinese annual plant of the Asteraceae family with a very ancient cultivation history that has produced and still produces many interesting varieties for borders and cut flowers. The plants in the Surpresso mixture reach a height of 70 cm (28in) in a few months and are well-branched. Their stems bear oval, serrated leaves of bright green. Flowering occurs from June to September, depending on the sowing date, in 6 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) diameter heads made up of a row of ligulate or coloured petals surrounding a centre of gplden yellow fertile florets. The plant lives only one season, flowering and producing seeds.
Callistephus Surpresso is a standout plant for borders. Its flowers create unforgettable compositions. Although a bit out of fashion, China asters remain highly decorative plants, planted in large clumps in borders. Their flowers are perfect for wildflower bouquets, and the plants bloom for months if care is taken to remove old flowers. Even just for bouquets, sow them in the vegetable garden to obtain a profusion of flowers at the end of summer. Among the wide range of varieties, there are flowers of various shapes resembling chrysanthemums, with fine and tapered petals, sometimes even tousled, in pompons, or simple like those of the species. They come in many shades, ranging from white to yellow, and all shades of pink and purple. The dwarf cultivars will be perfect for edging and will thrive in balcony planters, while the tall varieties with single or double flowers will enliven the back of borders.

Planting and care
Sowing of Callistephus:
These plants should never be sown in the same place two years in a row. Sow outdoors from April to May, and transplant as soon as the plants have 2 to 4 leaves, at a spacing of 40 cm (16in), in a well-prepared, moist, and well-fertilised soil, in a sunny location. Water frequently, but sparingly. It is beneficial to transplant multiple times, keeping the root ball intact, to promote root development and limit the growth of the stems, which could break under the weight of the flowers.
For earlier flowering, sow in pots or trays under glass, from February to April. Sow Callistephus in trays filled with sand and peat under cover, at a temperature of 16°C (60.8°F) to 20°C (68°F). Transplant into individual small pots when the seedlings have at least four leaves. Plant them in the garden when they reach a height of 15 cm (6in). Use stakes to support the taller varieties with double flowers. A later sowing in June allows for staggered blooming until the end of autumn. In this case, the seeds can be sown directly in the garden.
Cultivation:
These plants thrive in neutral to slightly alkaline, fertile, and well-drained soil, and require a sunny position. Adequate watering, twice a week during dry periods, is necessary, but be careful to water the base of the plant and not the foliage, as Callistephus are susceptible to powdery mildew. Remove old flowers regularly to prolong blooming and prevent weakening of the plant.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
