Description

The Polar Star Crested Chrysanthemum or Chrysanthemum carinatum Polar Star is an annual plant often called Tricolour Daisy because of the different colors present on the flower.

The flower has the shape of a Daisy which is called a head.

Its center is composed of tiny tubular flowers which appear brown when closed. These flowers will gradually open in a circular fashion and reveal their yellow stamens. The outer part of this Daisy is composed of ligulate flowers, which means that part of it has transformed into a long white petal. At the base of this petal, a touch of yellow color seems to encircle the flower's center.

The dominant white color of the flower, highlighted by yellow and brown, is the appeal of this Tricolour Chrysanthemum (in Latin Chrysanthemum tricolor).

Ismelia carinata, Ismelia versicolor, Matricaria carinatum are synonyms of its name that you may come across here or there, but rest assured we are referring to the same plant.

It is a bushy plant that is not afraid of cold weather and can therefore be sown directly in place in April-May.

Standing at 75 cm (29.5 in) tall, it integrates perfectly into a bed of perennial plants where it completes the range of colors. When sown in a pot, it provides a long-lasting solution for decorating the terrace and balcony. With excellent vase life, it will allow you to create beautiful field bouquets from June to September.

Very easy to grow, it adapts to all types of soil while preferring a well-sunny exposure.

The ecological gesture: by sowing the Crested Chrysanthemum in your garden, you attract pollinating insects that will enjoy its nectar and thereby promote the ecosystem of your garden.

Planting and care

Sow the Chrysanthemum carinatum in March-April directly in a sunny location. Prepare the soil well beforehand and add some compost. Sow your seeds broadcast. Cover the seeds by sprinkling some compost on top, gently firm it down and water generously with a fine rain.

The growth is rapid. Once the young plants have reached a height of 5 cm (2 in), thin out the rows a little. Optionally, transplant some of them into pots or another bed.

Remove faded flowers to promote flowering renewal.
