Description
The 'Mignon Mix' single Dwarf Dahlia is a blend of vividly coloured and simply beautiful Garden Dahlias. It forms low clumps that bloom with bright yellow, red, orange, medium pink, and white flowers. Planted en masse, they find a place in all gardens, even the smallest ones, in borders, flower beds and on terraces or balconies. The stout and vigorous plant produces numerous flowers from June until the frosts.
Dahlias, from the aster family, are originally native to the high plateaus of Mexico. Currently, the approximately 20,000 horticultural varieties created by humans can be found in gardens worldwide.
The 'Mignon Mix' variety is a dwarf Dahlia derived from Dahlia variabilis. The plant will not exceed 45 cm in all directions, it has a bushy and compact habit, not requiring staking. The flowering period of this variety is from June to October. The heads measure 5 cm in diameter, resembling lovely simple corollas, composed of a row of well-opened petals, in various vivid colours. The central disc is yellow. The very branched stems are hollow, and the leaves are opposite and divided into 3 or 5 very toothed lobes. The leaves and stems are dark green.
To encourage flowering and extend the blooming period, make sure to remove faded flowers. Even better, regularly cut them to create charming colourful bouquets by combining various varieties.
The Dahlias from the 'Mignon Mix' selection create beautiful splashes of colour at the edge of borders, harmonising with Coneflowers, Sneezeweeds, and Cosmos, for example. Pair them with a Pennisetum villosum, a feathery-looking grass, to add a touch of softness to the setting. This variety is also perfect for container growing, ideal for enhancing terraces and balconies.
A star plant for borders and cottage gardens, Dahlias confidently accompany the most beautiful flowers as well as the humble ones from the vegetable garden. They create beautiful flowering pots or charming bouquets. In Mexico, this tuberous plant was initially cultivated as a root vegetable for consumption. However, its poor taste qualities relegated it to the status of an ornamental plant. Since then, the interest in their beautiful exuberance has never waned.

Planting and care
Sow the Dahlia Mignon Mix in February-March, in seed trays or pots of seed compost placed in a propagator or a warm place, to maintain a temperature of 18 to 20°C. The seeds will be buried under 1.5 mm of fine soil. Germination will occur within 7 to 21 days. Transplant the young plants into 8 cm pots when they are large enough to be moved, taking care not to damage the roots. Harden these seedlings gradually and transplant them when all risk of frost has passed, maintaining a spacing of 30 cm. Plant Dahlias in full sun after the last frosts; rich, moist, and well-drained soils are perfect. However, stagnant moisture would promote tuber rot. Amend the soil with compost and sand if necessary. Work the soil deeply and enrich it, for example, with crushed horn or dehydrated blood. After planting, water generously once and then renew this watering regularly during the first 6 weeks to aid in rooting. Dahlias are sensitive to cold, so they need to be overwintered. In November, the first frosts will blacken the foliage, indicating it's time to dig them up. Carefully unearth the tubers, remove as much soil as possible, let the foliage dry so the tubers can replenish their reserves. Then cut the stems to 10 cm. Spread your bulbs in a crate on newspaper. Store them protected from frost in a dry, cool, dark place, such as a frost-free garage or attic. In southern regions near the coast, experiencing few frosty days per year, it is possible to leave them in place. In this case, simply cover the ground with a layer of leaves or straw for protection.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
