Description

Sweet William 'Etournelle White' (Dianthus barbatus) produces clusters of small, pure white, pleasantly fragrant flowers. They bloom on long stems approximately 10 days earlier than other Sweet William varieties. Ideal for cut flowers or container growing, this cultivar self-seeds freely.

Dianthus barbatus is a plant from the Caryophyllaceae family found in many temperate regions of Europe and Asia. Not very perennial but hardy, it is most often considered a biennial, flowering in the second year after sowing. The Dianthus barbatus 'Etournelle' series is appreciated for its long stems, early and uniform flowering, and its vibrant colour palette ranging from pure white to intense pink, deep red and variegated shades.

The 'Etournelle White' quickly forms a very tight basal clump formed of long, pointed, light green to glaucous leaves. The plants reach 40 to 50 cm in height when in flower, which occurs in June. The small flowers are gathered in flattened cymes 8 to 15 cm in diameter, borne at the end of thin, sturdy stems. The flower fragrance is both spicy and sweet, reminiscent of clove and cinnamon. When planted in partial shade, this variety will flower until autumn, though with fewer flowers. Sweet William is cultivated primarily as a biennial. This means it is sown one year and will flower the following year, then decline after flowering. Its cultivation is easy in cool, rich, well-drained soil, in full sun.

Sweet William 'Etournelle White' is best planted near the house, in borders or in pots, to enjoy its long, fragrant flowering. Combine it in beds with flowers of different shapes such as Echinacea 'Butterfly Kisses', Oriental Poppies 'Manhattan', Speedwells and Delphinium grandiflorum sinensis for example. Add a few clumps of Stipa tenuifolia for their lightness and movement. In pots on the patio or balcony, ensure good drainage and watering, with occasional fertiliser applications. In a vase, they last up to 15 days!

Planting and care

Sow your Sweet William 'Etournelle White' seeds indoors or in a greenhouse from January to February as a late-flowering annual, or from June to July to see them flower the following spring.

Sow the seeds on the surface of good quality, well-drained compost. Place the seed tray in a mini greenhouse at a temperature of 15-20°C, or in a clear polythene bag until germination, which takes 7-21 days. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged and do not exclude light.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transfer them into 8 cm pots and allow the young plants to develop in cooler conditions. When all risk of frosts has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting out. Space them 30 cm apart in any fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
