More information

A biennial variety with classic charm, appreciated for its single white flowers with a broad contrasting purple centre. It has slightly fragrant, generous flowering from June to August and prefers sunny to partially shaded positions, in rich, moist, well-drained soil with a neutral to alkaline pH. Sow the seeds under cover from January to February as a late-flowering annual, or from June to July to see them flower the following spring. It is easy to grow, suitable for borders and container cultivation, and its sturdy stems make it an excellent cut flower.

Description

Growing Sweet William 'Etournelle White with Eye' Seeds from seed allows you to grow this charming biennial plant, Dianthus barbatus, at low cost. It has an upright and bushy habit. Its abundant flowering consists of white flowers adorned with a rather wide purple or garnet eye, adding a colourful touch to flower beds and containers. Highly appreciated for borders, fresh bouquets, and cottage gardens, it requires little maintenance, provided that excess winter moisture is avoided. If the plant is placed in partial shade, it will flower until autumn, though with fewer flowers.

Dianthus barbatus is a plant from the Caryophyllaceae family found in many temperate regions of Europe and Asia. Not very perennial, but hardy, it is most often considered a biennial, flowering in the second year after sowing. 'Etournelle White with Eye' quickly forms a very tight basal clump of long, light green to glaucous leaves with pointed tips. The size of the plants varies from 40 to 50 cm in height when in flower. Flowering occurs in June. The small flowers, gathered in flattened cymes 8 to 15 cm in diameter, are borne at the end of thin and sturdy stems. The scent of the flowers is both spicy and sweet, reminiscent of clove and cinnamon.

Sweet William 'Etournelle White with Eye' integrates elegantly into refined or rustic landscape compositions. Its bicolour inflorescences bring a touch of light and contrast to flower beds and borders. To enhance its presence, pair it with plants featuring soft hues and varied textures. Geranium magnificum, with its purple flowers and dense foliage, creates a harmonious contrast. Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote', with its deep blue spikes and captivating fragrance, enhances the Mediterranean ambience. Finally, Stachys byzantina offers silvery, fuzzy foliage that highlights the whiteness of the Sweet William. In pots, these combinations create elegant, fragrant compositions, ideal for sunny terraces.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Sweet William Etournelle White with Eye indoors or in a greenhouse, from January to February as a late-flowering annual, or from June to July to see them flower in spring.

Sow on the surface of a good quality, well-drained compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator at a temperature of 15-20°C, or in a clear polythene bag until germination which takes 7-21 days. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged and do not exclude light.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, prick out into 8cm pots and allow the young plants to develop in cooler conditions. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days before transplanting outside. Space them 30cm apart, and plant in any fertile, well-drained soil in full sun.
