Description

Gaura lindheimeri 'Emmeline White' is a small, compact and bushy plant that offers an earlier white flowering than most other varieties. Between late spring and late summer, it resembles a bouquet covered in small, star-shaped white flowers, as light as a flutter of butterflies. This variety is perfect for the front of borders or for edging pathways, as well as for cut flowers. Although short-lived, it is undemanding, generous, and essential in a flower garden. It is easy to sow, grows quickly, and flowers from a young age.

Gaura lindheimeri 'Emmeline white' belongs to the evening primrose family and is a cousin of evening primrose. The natural range of Gaura lindheimeri, from which this selection originates, is located on the border between Mexico and the United States (prairies and pine forests of Louisiana and Texas). It is one of the most floriferous plants. 'Emmeline White' has a compact, bushy habit. It is a perennial with a taproot, forming a bushy clump from a basal rosette, slightly spreading, 35-40 cm in height, with a spread of 30 to 40 cm. It is the branched, numerous, and slender flower stems that give the plant its bushy appearance. Flowering occurs in successive waves, from May-June until autumn. The butterfly-like flowers are grouped in panicles. The medium-green foliage is deciduous in winter and consists of small leaves, hairy on both sides. The root system of Gaura is a taproot that allows the plant to anchor itself in poor or rocky soils.

Gauras have quickly become the stars of urban flower beds and gardens. This success is due to their incredible floriferousness and their rapid growth. These plants, which seem unaffected by the wind, quickly become indispensable for those who have tried them. No matter where they are planted, they bring lightness and grace. Gaura lindheimeri 'Emmeline White' is perfect for the front of herbaceous borders or mixed borders, and to highlight the curve of a pathway. It pairs well with roses, grows among shrubs like abelias and deutzias, and accompanies undemanding perennials like catmints and scabious. Gaura also thrives in containers and pots.

The species name comes from the Greek "gauros", which means magnificent and proud, alluding to its astonishing flowering resembling butterflies clinging to its stems.

Planting and care

Sow the seeds of Gaura from January to May or September-October.

January to May seems to be the most favourable period for sowing. You can plant the young plants in the ground in summer. Sow the seeds 2mm deep in a tray or pot filled with compost and cover with a pinch of sieved soil or a thin layer of vermiculite. Water lightly. Keep at 18 - 24° C, under cover. You can also cover the tray or pots with a plastic bag, which you should turn over every 3 days to avoid excessive condensation on the walls. Place on the windowsill, away from direct sunlight. Germination takes 15 to 30 days. It is sometimes slower. Take the seedlings out of their shelter as soon as germination is effective. When the plants are large enough to handle, transplant them into a 9 cm pot. Harden them off before planting them outside in May.

If you have sown late, towards the end of the year, let the plants grow until they go into winter dormancy. Keep frost-free in a well-lit and cool place during winter. Once green shoots appear, water the young plants and keep them frost-free in a well-lit place to transplant them in May.

Gaura lindheimeri is not picky about soil type, as long as it is well-drained, it will even accept quite poor and dry. The only enemy of this plant is stagnant moisture, even more so than cold. Incorporate draining materials such as gravel and river sand into the garden soil. These conditions will allow it to live for several years. Short pruning is essential after each flowering wave to encourage new shoots that will flower in turn. With this method, you can achieve multiple flowerings from June until November without interruption (do not prune all the clumps in the garden at the same time). Pruning at the start of vegetation (March-April) will give the plant a harmonious shape.
