Description

Hollyhock Antwerp Stars Mix (also known by its Latin names : Alcea filicifolia and Althaea filicifolia) very hardy, ephemeral perennial with single, multicoloured flowers blooming from June to August. From the mallow family, it is a plant that is typically used in cottage gardens.

Widespread in our French countrysides where it bears many pretty common names, the hollyhock is often grown at the back of beds or placed against a wall to protect it from strong winds.

In the year following sowing, tall floral stems quickly shoot up from its small clumps of lobed leaves, reaching up to 1.50 m high.

The multi-coloured spikes carry (yellow, dark red, bright red, pink, pale pink and white) 5 to 8 cm, cup-shaped single flowers that bloom in a staggered fashion, from June to August. During this period, they will attract bees and butterflies to your garden.

Planting and care

Sow hollyhocks from May to July. It takes 15 to 20 days for the young shoots to appear. Transplant the young plants when they have reached a height of 7 cm, 20 cm apart. In the following spring, place them in your beds, spacing them 30 to 35 cm apart. Staking is required if the spot is not sheltered from winds. This rust-resistant variety can be grown in the same place every year, without the risk of its leaves being attacked by this disease which is usually very common in hollyhocks.
