Description

OurImpatiens interspecific Solarscape® Orange Burst Seeds offer an economical solution to bring colour to the garden or balcony. This hybrid annual plant stands out for its improved sun tolerance and resistance to downy mildew. It forms attractive clumps that produce an abundance of uncompromisingly orange flowers throughout the season.

The Impatiens or Interspecific Impatiens Solarscape® Orange Burst or 'PAS1433403' is an F1 hybrid cultivar developed by PanAmerican Seed, resulting from a cross between Impatiens walleriana and I. hawkeri. It combines the floriferousness of the walleriana species with the sun tolerance and robustness of hawkeri. 'Solarscape' is a series of interspecific impatiens propagated only by seed, performing as well as those multiplied by propagation by cuttings. All these plants belong to the Balsaminaceae family.

The Impatiens Solarscape® Orange Burst is a frost-tender perennial grown as an annual in our climates. It has a bushy, rounded habit, reaching 25 to 30 cm in height and 33 to 50 cm in width. Its growth is rapid, reaching its final size 11 to 16 weeks after sowing. The flowers of a diameter of 6 to 7 cm display a pumpkin orange colour. Flowering extends from May-June until the first frosts. The ovate, dark green and glossy leaves measure 5 to 7 cm in length. The stems are fleshy, succulent and ramified from the base.

With its cascades of orange flowers, the Impatiens Solarscape Orange Burst enhances borders, planters and edgings. It is used in sunny or partially shaded areas where it forms incredibly colourful displays. Pair it with Petunias 'Supertunia Bordeaux' for an intense contrast, annual Verbenas 'Endurascape Blue Imp' for soft blue touches, or Bidens 'Beedance Painted Red' for a sunny harmony. These combinations create a joyful and abundant display, perfect for brightening up balconies, patios or summer beds.

Tip: To maintain adequate coolness and preserve soil moisture, we recommend applying a mulch at the base of the plants.

Planting and care

To successfully sow Impatiens Solarscape 'Orange Burst', begin by sowing the seeds indoors approximately 8 to 10 weeks before the last frosts typically observed. Use a light, well-drained compost, preferably enriched with organic matter. The seeds should simply be pressed onto the surface of the soil, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of around 20 to 24°C and ensure the growing medium remains moist, but not waterlogged. Germination should occur within 14 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, transplant them into individual buckets, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions. Wait until the risk of frost has completely passed before planting them in the ground or in planters, spaced 15-20 cm apart.

Impatiens Solarscape is easy to grow. It should be placed in full sun or partial shade. To accelerate its growth, pre-grow it in a pot in a warm and bright location. Place the Impatiens in cool, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water regularly, but be cautious of excess. Apply a liquid fertiliser for planters once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as needed to maintain a beautiful appearance and prolong flowering. Be mindful to protect it from slugs, which are fond of their young leaves. Finally, although resistant to mildew, it is important to monitor for signs of diseases or parasitic issues and intervene promptly if necessary.
