Description
Impatiens walleriana 'Beacon Mix' is a disease-resistant, very floriferous, well-branched plant that can be grown in both sun and shade. Offered as a mix, this selection provides a beautiful range of colours. Perfect for borders, flower beds or containers, it blends harmoniously into many landscaping designs. Sow from March to May, either under cover or directly in the ground, allowing for blooms as early as mid-June.
Impatiens walleriana belongs to the Balsaminaceae family. Native to tropical regions of East Africa, particularly Kenya and Tanzania, this species has spread worldwide due to its popularity in gardens. Plants in the 'Beacon' series grow quickly and are grown as annuals in our climates. They were selected in the U.S.A for their ability to tolerate full sun, and their resistance to powdery mildew and other diseases that usually affect these plants. 'Beacon' Impatiens develop from a thick crown into an upright clump with sturdy stems with a bushy and spreading habit, reaching a height of 40 to 50 cm, with a diameter of about 35 cm.
The flowers of Impatiens walleriana 'Beacon Mix' are the main attraction of each plant. They display a palette of bright and varied colours, including shades of red, pink, purple, and white. Blooming occurs from June until the first frosts. The relatively small but numerous flowers form a dense floral carpet that almost entirely covers the foliage. The leaves are intense green, ovate, and slightly toothed, providing a beautiful backdrop for the vibrant flower colours. This variety grows rapidly, quickly filling in empty spaces in beds or containers.
'Beacon Mix' Impatiens are well suited for beds or large borders. They are plants that have few rivals in bringing life to partially shaded areas of the garden, much like begonias. In sunny spots, pair them with green fox-tail amaranths, for example. In summer arrangements, mix your impatiens with petunias and annual sages, with ivy-leaved geraniums...
Tip: To maintain adequate moisture and preserve soil humidity, it is a good idea to mulch around the base of the plants.

Planting and care
For a successful sowing of Impatiens walleriana 'Beacon Mix', start by sowing the seeds indoors about 8 to 10 weeks before the last usual frost date. Use light and well-drained soil, preferably enriched with organic matter. The seeds should be simply pressed onto the soil surface, as they need light to germinate. Maintain a constant temperature of around 20 to 24°C and ensure that the substrate is kept moist but not waterlogged. Germination should occur in 14 to 21 days. Once the seedlings are sufficiently developed, transplant them into individual pots, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions. Wait until the risk of frost has completely passed before planting them in the ground or in a planter, with 15-20 cm spacing.
Impatiens 'Beacon' is easy to grow. Place it in full sun or partial shade. To speed up its growth, grow it for a while it in a pot in a warm and bright location. Plant Impatiens in moist, well-drained soil rich in humus. Water regularly, but be careful not to overwater. Apply a liquid fertiliser for planters once or twice a week during the growth period. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as needed to maintain a beautiful appearance and extend flowering. Protect it from slugs that enjoy their young leaves. Lastly, although resistant to mildew, it is important to monitor signs of diseases or parasites and intervene promptly if necessary.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
