Description

Laurentia Avant-Garde Pink, also known as Axillary Isotoma or Axillary Solenopsis, is a charming yet underrated perennial, frost-tender plant. From May to October, a multitude of small fragrant pink stars emerge from its beautiful and finely cut foliage. It is highly floriferous and looks adorable in borders or containers.

Originating from Australia and part of the Campanulaceae family, Laurentia is fast-growing and early-flowering. Its star-shaped flowers are light pink and fragrant. They are borne on evergreen, dark green foliage composed of small, narrow, and deeply serrated leaves.

It has a highly branched, ball-shaped habit, reaching a height and width of 30 cm: a compact growth that is highly great for small gardens!

Laurentia thrives in sunny and semi-shaded positions, in moist and well-drained soils. It is easy to grow, but it is frost-tender. Therefore, you can grow it as an annual (it's easy to grow from seed), or keep it from one year to the next in a pot or container kept frost-free over winter.

It is still a relatively unknown plant which you can place on a balcony, terrace, or in the garden where it will be perfect in borders with Sunpatiens Compact Lilac, Silver Wormwood, or Spiked Pink.

Planting and care

Sow from January to March on the surface of good seed compost and gently firm. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) at a temperature of 15 to 21 °C until germination, which usually takes 20 days.

When the young plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplantation. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outside, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 15 cm (6in) or grow them in pots or containers.
