Description
This mysterious Mirabilis longiflora from Mexico and the southern United States is the queen of the night in a scented garden. This perennial plant for dry areas opens white trumpets during summer nights, with a tube reaching 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) long, displaying magenta red stamens, curled like butterfly proboscis, emerging from the heart of the dark magenta corolla. It is a spreading, bushy plant, covered with blue-green heart-shaped leaves. It needs well-drained, preferably limestone soil, moist in summer but dry in winter to withstand the cold, and plenty of sunlight.
This plant, like its cousin the marvel of Peru (Mirabilis jalapa), belongs to the nyctaginaceae family and is found in the wild in the desert areas of Western North America, and Mexico. It grows at altitude in limestone soil, often on the foothills of rocky canyons not far from the edge of watercourses, which provide it with some water in summer. This herbaceous perennial plant develops from a tuberous root. It forms a clump of stems and somewhat untidy foliage, with a spreading and sprawling habit, sometimes almost creeping. It reaches 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) high under optimal conditions, with a spread of 1 m (3ft) starting from around May. Its summer flowering is adapted to pollination by moths, its flowers have a long, slender tube widening into a funnel with a diameter of 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in). They are white, revealing a magenta throat from which prominent stamens emerge in the same colour, exceeding the corolla by 5 cm (2in) and covered in orange pollen. They open in the evening and close in the morning, filling the air with a pleasant fragrance. The stems are covered with heart-shaped, fairly dark, slightly sticky green leaves with bluish hues. The vegetation disappears in autumn.

Planting and care
Sowing:
Sow Mirabilis longiflora seeds from February to April on the surface of moist compost in pots or trays. Cover the seeds with compost or vermiculite to a depth equivalent to their size then place them in a propagator or a transparent plastic bag and keep them in a warm place, at a temperature between 20 and 25 °C (68 and 77°F). Do not exclude light as it promotes germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination usually takes 7 to 21 days.
When the young plants are large enough to handle, transplant them into 7.5 cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimate the plants to cooler conditions for a few weeks before planting them out, after all risk of frost, 30 to 40cm (12 to 16in) apart.
Cultivation:
Mirabilis longiflora needs a perfectly drained, light, but fertile soil, in a very sunny position. It tolerates drought well, but it will naturally flower after a period of rain in the wild. In non-Mediterranean climates, this plant flowers in summer. Where the summer is dry, it will flower as soon as the rains return, in September-October. when growing in pots, ensure good drainage. It is a good idea to protect the plant from winter rains.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
