Description

Nasturtium Tip-Top Pink Blush, known by its Latin name Tropaeolum minus, is a dwarf variety with a unique colour, awarded as an "Approved Novelty" by Fleuroselect. It is compact with delicate cream flowers veined with pink on a high-standing emerald green foliage. Compact and non-trailing, this small annual is perfect for decorating pots or borders in a small garden. Both flowers and leaves are edible, with a peppery flavour.

Tropaeolum minus or dwarf nasturtium belongs to the Tropaeolaceae family. It originates from South America, endemic to the mountainous regions of Ecuador and Peru. The Nasturtium offers pretty flowers in bold colours, ranging from yellow to red, and beautiful round leaves. Pink Blush has a compact, non-trailing habit, quickly forming a tuft of 30 cm all around. Its pretty umbrella-like leaves, with a bluish-green hue, are covered with trumpet-shaped flowers.

The Nasturtium is very easy to grow, it can be sown directly in place in spring. It grows quickly, blooms from June until the first frosts, covers the ground or cascades from a pot. At the edge or at the forefront of borders, its foliage is initially very ornamental thanks to its round and upright shape. It quickly becomes covered in a generous and cheerful flowering. Pair it with other floriferous and straightforward plants like lavenders or asters, other annuals like Cosmos, Zinnias, Marigolds.

As a bonus, all parts are edible: leaves and flowers in salad, as well as seeds, pickled in vinegar like capers. It attracts aphids but do not deprive yourself of this lovely plant: in the vegetable garden and orchard this can be an advantage as it diverts attention (while hosting valuable food for ladybird larvae) and thus protects your crops.

Planting and care

Sow Nasturtium Pink Blush directly outside, in its final location, from March to May. Choose a spot in full sun on well-drained soil that has been well loosened beforehand. Sow the seeds at a depth of 2 cm in rows spaced 30 cm apart, covering the seeds with a thickness equal to their size. Water the soil regularly, especially during dry periods. Germination usually takes 7 to 12 days.

When the young plants are large enough to handle, thin to keep one plant every 30 cm. You can also sow indoors at a temperature of 15-25 ° C. When the plants are large enough to handle, transplant and grow them on in cooler conditions until they reach a sufficient size to be planted outside after all risk of frost has passed.

nasturtiums appreciate moist, well-drained soil, in full sun or partial shade. They are frequently targeted by aphids and cabbage white butterflies. Spraying a solution made of traditional black soap and water (4 to 5 cc / 1 l of water) will help you limit damage in case of aphid attack.
