Description

Viola x wittrockiana 'Frou Frou' organic seeds produce plants that develop large flowers in a mix of colours, with ruffled edges. The hues range from yellow to reddish-brown, purplish-pink, pale pink, with brown-black spotted patterns. An unusual, yet robust and floriferous pansy, stunning in pots or as an edible decoration to place on your finest salads or pastries. You can sow these pansies from February to April for summer flowering or from June to August for blooms the following spring.

This tender little flower with retro charm evokes vintage prints. Often underrated due to misuse in public spaces, it nevertheless deserves a prime spot both in the garden and on windowsills.

Belonging to the Violaceae family, Viola x wittrockiana, sometimes called the Swiss Giant Pansy, is a herbaceous perennial, typically grown as an annual or even a biennial. Pansies do not exist in the wild; they are the result of hybridisation between several species. There are many varieties, all bearing adorable flowers with spotted or plain petals in varying hues. The leaves are medium green, elliptical, and broadly scalloped, with a compact and branching habit.

Pansies are not demanding—they thrive in sun or partial shade, in moderately rich, well-drained soil. While lovely in the garden, they are also appreciated in window boxes, where they can be admired up close while staying warm. In the garden or large containers, pair them with other pansies and Violas, Sweet Caroline Morning Glories, or a grass like Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum'.

Pansy petals are edible, adding a unique touch to salads and pastries. For this purpose, grow them as you would your vegetables, in the most natural way possible.

Planting and care

Calendar: Sow organic 'Frou Frou' Pansiy seeds from February to April for summer flowering or from June to August for flowering the following spring.

In a tray filled with good seed compost, bury the seeds at a depth of 1.5 mm and cover, for example with a sheet of newspaper, as darkness aids germination. Maintain a temperature between 15-18°C while keeping the soil moist. Germination takes between 14 and 21 days. Be wary of excessively high temperatures, which can prevent seedling emergence.

Once the seedlings are developed enough to handle, transplant them into pots and allow your young plants to grow on, gradually acclimatising them to outdoor conditions over about two weeks. Plant your Pansies in the garden, spaced 25-30 cm apart, in sun or partial shade.

For late winter/early spring sowings, wait until all risk of frost has passed.
