Description

The Hybrid Petunias from the 'Duo Mixed' F1 selection are distinguished by their double and early flowering in many colour combinations ranging from white to dark red, including various shades of pink and mauve. Depending on the plants, the beautifully fringed flowers are either solid in colour, bicoloured, or marked with veins of different colours. They bloom on homogeneous plants with compact and dense vegetation. Forming beautiful flowering domes for months, these easy-to-grow annual plants are perfect for adding a touch of fantastic colour to terraces and balconies.

Our hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. The petunias from the 'Duo Mixed F1' mix belong to the Solanaceae family and are closely related to ornamental tobacco, and their foliage contains alkaloids. They are tender herbaceous plants with a short lifespan, grown annually in our climates. Each plant quickly forms a round and ramified clump about 30 cm (12in) tall and 40 cm (16in) in diameter, with a dense yet graceful habit. They flower from June to September-October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and regular fertilisation is provided. Their well-double flowers are of a good size, offering a rich palette of colours, including pure white, shades of pink and mauve, violet-red, and dark magenta. The small, somewhat pubescent leaves have entire edges and a dark green hue.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for a long time. The results are impressive, as petunias compete with geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this 'Duo Mixed' F1 selection. Plant petunias in large pots or hanging baskets. They can also be planted in flower beds to punctuate perennial plant borders.

Attention, seeds reserved for very experienced gardeners who are accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow the petunia seeds from late winter to mid-spring at 21-27°C (69.8-80.6°F) in a tray by spreading the seeds on the surface of a good seed-specific research area enriched with compost. Mix the seeds with sand or light soil to sow more clearly. Do not cover the seeds; press them onto the medium with a simple press. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Keep the sowing in the light in a transparent, airtight plastic bag. Germination usually takes 10 to 21 days.

When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and let them grow in cooler conditions. For 10 to 15 days, gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions; then, when all risk of frost has passed, plant the plants in sunny and sheltered areas in well-drained soil.

For pot cultivation, transplant the seedlings into 7.5 cm (3in) diameter buckets, place them in a cool, well-ventilated area, in a bright location and protected from direct sunlight.
