A variety of grandiflora petunia with pure white, finely fringed, double flowers. Each plant forms a compact clump of 30 to 35cm, covered with corollas 6-7cm in diameter from May until the first frosts. This very floriferous, annual petunia is equally suited to flower beds, borders, containers and hanging baskets. The coated seeds make sowing much easier and ensure regular germination.

Description

Petunia grandiflora fimbriata White Double is a pure white, large-flowered, fringed petunia, which brings light and charm to borders and containers. Its finely cut corollas are half single and half double. This well-branched petunia forms a small, very dense cushion, beautifully elegant in borders or in pots. Its flowering enlivens balconies and terraces all summer long.

These coated seeds can be sown with precision, making it easy to obtain numerous, well-spaced young plants that are easier to transplant.

Hybrid petunias are derived from several species native to the warm regions of South America. They belong to the Solanaceae family. 'White Double' is a selection from the Grandiflora fimbriata horticultural group, characterised by very large, intensely fringed flowers, here in a dazzling white. It is a frost-tender variety grown as an annual in our climates.
Each plant forms a clump of 30 to 35cm in height and 25 to 30cm in spread. The supple, hairy and slightly sticky stems bear medium green, ovate, entire leaves, also hairy and a little sticky. Flowering begins between May and June and continues until the first frosts. The flowers reach 6 to 7cm in diameter. Approximately 50% of the flowers are double, with numerous crumpled petals; the rest are single. A traditional variety long listed in European seed catalogues, 'White Double' is renowned for its floribundity, its good performance in summer and the reliability of its reproducible seeds.

Petunia fimbriata 'White Double' can be used in sunny borders, at the edge of flower beds and in all balcony displays. Its rounded, slightly trailing habit allows it to quickly fill bowls, urns, troughs and window boxes. It pairs well with many other annuals. Consider Petunia x hybrida Capella Hello Yellow with its large, bright yellow flowers, and Lobelia erinus 'Crystal Palace' with its deep blue-violet flowers. In hanging baskets, you can plant it with a Calibrachoa Superbells Tropical Sunrise, with its small trumpets finely striped in yellow, pink and red.

Planting and care

Sow the coated seeds of Petunia fimbriata White Double from late winter to mid-spring at 21-27°C, in a seed tray, scattering the seeds on the surface of good quality seed compost, enriched with compost. You can mix the seeds with sand or light compost to sow more thinly. Do not cover the seeds, but press them gently onto the substrate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Keep the sowing in the light, in a sealed transparent plastic bag. Germination usually takes 10 to 21 days.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and allow them to develop in cooler conditions. Over 10 to 15 days, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions, then, once all risk of frost has passed, plant the young plants in the open ground, in a sunny position sheltered from strong winds, in well-drained soil. For container growing, prick out the seedlings into 7.5cm diameter pots, place them in a cool, well-ventilated spot, in a bright position but out of direct sunlight.
