Description
Petunia Grandiflora 'Purple Dwarf' is a historic dwarf petunia, created in 1958, which is now once again taking its rightful place in summer pots and borders. Its single or semi-double, large purple-pink flowers are edged and veined with darker purple. Compact yet generous, this petunia quickly forms a dense cushion, perfectly suited to containers, window boxes and sunny borders. A reliable choice for a summer display that is both vintage and very contemporary!
Botanically, 'Purple Dwarf' belongs to the horticultural hybrid Petunia × atkinsiana (or Petunia × hybrida), of the Solanaceae family. The wild species behind the hybrid varieties are frost-tender perennials native to South America, particularly Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and southern Brazil.
'Purple Dwarf' is a dwarf cultivar of the grandiflora nana type, selected by the Czech seed house František Černý in the mid-20th century, and now revived within the historic ‘Golden Heritage’ line of large-flowered petunias.
This variety stands out for its compact habit, particularly abundant flowering, and the notable proportion of semi-double flowers that give it the appearance of a small carnation. The plant has a bushy, rounded, slightly spreading habit, with fine but sturdy, well-branched stems. The flowers, shaped like widely opened funnels, measure 5 to 7cm in diameter. A darker centre and a network of dark veins are very visible on the purple-pink petals. There is a mix of single flowers and more or less double, sometimes frilled ones. Like all petunias, 'Purple Dwarf' is a frost-tender perennial grown as an annual in our climates: sown in late winter and transplanted after the frosts, it completes most of its cycle in a single season.
This petunia, widely distributed in the 1950s–1960s, had practically disappeared before being recently reissued by the Černý house, which presents it as an ‘antique novelty’ emblematic of its family history as petunia breeders.
Petunia Grandiflora 'Purple Dwarf' is ideal for creating highly colourful summer pots. It is also used at the front of a border or along a terrace edge, sheltered from the wind. In a window box, it will pair well with Petunia Mystical Midnight Gold, with its double violet and pale yellow flowers, for a sophisticated blend of warm and cool tones. In a hanging basket, it can be paired with a mini-petunia or Calibrachoa Superbells Holy Cow®, bright pink edged with white and dotted with yellow, for a colourful cascading effect. A Bidens Pirate’s Pearl, with its airy small white daisies, will brighten the whole arrangement. In all cases, give it a sunny position, a rich but well-drained substrate, regular watering and a feed of flowering plant fertiliser to make the most of its blooms until the first frosts.

Planting and care
Sow Grandiflora Purple Dwarf Petunias (1958) from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and firm down gently. Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or near a radiator, at a temperature of 21 to 25 °C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which typically takes 10 to 21 days.
When the young Petunia plants are large enough to handle, prick them out. Gradually harden off the young plants to cooler conditions until they are sturdy enough to be planted outdoors, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 30cm or grow them in pots or window boxes.
