Description
The 'Peace' Petunia is a heritage variety of double-flowered petunia with large blooms, selected in 1947 by the Černý family in Bohemia, amidst the turmoil of the post-war era. Its highly double, broadly crinkled corollas, in a luminous silvery pink, form softly flowering cushions in seasonal beds, borders, and containers. Sown in late winter, then planted in a sunny spot in fertile, light, moist soil, it offers abundant flowering from late spring until the first frosts.
This petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family. It derives from hybrids of Petunia × atkinsiana (or Petunia x hybrida), resulting from cross-breeding between P. axillaris, with large, fragrant white flowers, and P. integrifolia (and related species), with violet flowers. These wild species originate from southern Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. In our climates, petunias are grown as annuals.
'Peace' is a large-flowered cultivar selected in Jaroměř, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), by the Černý family. Their work began in the late 1930s and culminated in 1947. The name 'Peace' symbolises the return of peace after the war. It is a collection variety, preserved for its somewhat retro charm. It stands out from classic petunias with its naturally compact, well-branched habit, and above all, its large, highly double flowers with wavy petals in a soft, luminous silvery pink.
The plant forms a low, dense, slightly spreading clump, 25 to 30cm tall and 25 to 35cm wide. Growth is rapid once warmth sets in. The clear green foliage is slightly downy, as with most petunias. The numerous flowers reach 8 to 10cm in diameter, placing them in the Grandiflora group. They are highly double, ruffled, and succeed one another continuously from June to October if the plant is fed regularly and spent flowers are removed. Their silvery pink hue, less garish than that of many modern petunias, lends a delicate, refined look to beds and containers. The flowers are visited by small pollinating insects.
'Peace' will take pride of place at the front of seasonal beds, along borders, beside a path, or in pots on the terrace. Its low, well-rounded silhouette forms a tenderly flowered carpet at the base of shrubs or roses. In window boxes, it decorates windowsills, the tops of low walls, or porch steps. Its silvery pink colouring will be enhanced by the dark foliage of the 'Jet Black' Sweet Potato Vine. It can also be paired with Supertunia Vista® Bubblegum or Supertunia Vista® Paradise petunias, which are pink and trailing, as well as with lavender mini-petunias like Calibrachoa Superbells® Unique 'Wisteria Star'.

Planting and care
Sow your Grandiflora Peace Petunias (1947) from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and firm down gently. Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or seal it inside a polythene bag) or near a radiator, at a temperature of 21 to 25 °C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which typically takes 10 to 21 days.
Once the young Petunia plants are large enough to handle, prick them out. Gradually harden off the young plants to cooler conditions until they are sturdy enough to be planted outside, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 30cm or grow them in pots or window boxes.
