Description

The petunias of the variety 'Prism Sunshine' F1 are distinguished by their flowering in a true pale yellow that does not fade in the sun and does not turn brown over time. This pastel flowering, on which a fresh green reflection hovers, comprises many large funnel-shaped flowers on homogeneous, compact and dense plants. Forming beautiful flower domes, these easy-to-grow annual plants are perfect for adding a touch of light to borders, terraces, and balconies.

Our hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. The 'Prism Sunshine' Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family and is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. The qualities of this variety have earned it international recognition from Fleuroselect. Each plant quickly forms a round and ramified clump 30 cm (12in) high and 50 cm (20in) in diameter, with a dense but graceful habit. It flowers from June to September, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and regularly supplied with fertiliser. Its cup-shaped flowers are good-sized, finely veined with chartreuse green on a soft yellow background. The small corolla centre, also green, sits at the bottom of a wide throat tinted with anise green. The foliage, quite pubescent, has entire edges and a dark green colour.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for a long time. The results are impressive, as petunias compete with geraniums for the splendour and length of their flowering, as demonstrated by this 'Prism Sunshine' variety. Plant petunias in large pots or hanging baskets. You can also plant them in flower beds to punctuate perennial plant borders.

Attention: seeds are reserved for highly experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow petunia seeds from late winter to mid-spring at 21-27°C (69.8-80.6°F) in a tray by spreading the seeds on the surface of a good seed-specific compost enriched with compost. Mix the seeds with sand or light compost to sow more thinly. Do not cover the seeds, but press them onto the substrate. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Keep the sowing in the light in a transparent, airtight plastic bag. Germination usually takes 10 to 21 days. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into pots and let them develop in cooler conditions. For 10 to 15 days, gradually acclimatise them to outdoor conditions; then, when all risk of frost has passed, plant them in sunny, sheltered areas with well-drained soil. For pot cultivation, transplant the seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) diameter pots, place them in a cool, well-ventilated area, in a bright position and protected from direct sunlight.
