Description

Growing Petunia Sophistica Blackberry F1 from seed allows you to grow this spectacular hybrid with a bushy, rounded habit at a low cost. It is prized for its large flowers with unique shades ranging from deep black to velvety plum, sometimes tinged with bronze highlights. This tender perennial with abundant flowering is ideal for creating striking contrasts in beds, planters or hanging baskets. It prefers a position in full sun, fertile and well-drained soil. To achieve generous and prolonged flowering, we advise you to regularly remove faded flowers and feed regularly.

The Petunia hybrid Sophistica Blackberry F1 is a cultivar belonging to the Solanaceae family, derived from the species Petunia × hybrida, itself resulting from cross-breeding between Petunia axillaris and Petunia integrifolia. These species are native to South America, mainly Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, where they thrive in open, sunny habitats. Sophistica Blackberry F1 was developed by PanAmerican Seed and is marketed under the cultivar name 'PAS933539' Sophistica® Blackberry. It is distinguished by its large, velvety flowers of intense black colour with purple highlights. This plant has a bushy and rounded habit, reaching a height of 25 to 40 cm and a spread of 25 to 30 cm, both in open ground and in pots. Its growth is rapid, with flowering beginning approximately 9 to 10 weeks after sowing. The grandiflora type flowers measure between 7.5 and 10 cm in diameter, are trumpet-shaped and emit a light fragrance. Flowering extends from spring until the first frosts. The foliage is medium green, with ovate and slightly sticky leaves. The stems are flexible and slightly sticky. The root system is fibrous and shallow, suited to well-drained soils.

Placed in a pot on a terrace or at the edge of a bed, Petunia Sophistica Blackberry F1 is eye-catching with its rare colour, which should be highlighted without overwhelming it. It pairs beautifully with the silvery hues of Senecio cineraria ‘Silver Gleam’, the purple foliage of Coleus ‘Black Prince’, or the white flowers of Gaura lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterflies’.

Warning, seeds reserved for experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust, barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow Petunia Sophistica Blackberry F1 from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and gently firm down. Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or above a radiator, at a temperature of 21 to 25°C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which usually takes 10 to 21 days.

When the young Petunia plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplanting. Gradually acclimatise the young plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outside, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm or grow them in pots or containers.
