Description
Petunia Superbissima Cerny's Triumph is a spectacular garden petunia, with giant flowers, ruffled, pleated and frilled like lace. It is a mixture offering a palette of bright pink, magenta, purple and white with a very dark, intensely veined throat. More vigorous than classic petunias, it establishes quickly and is covered in flowers from June until the first frosts. Its extravagant cushions create a sensation in sunny borders, containers and hanging baskets.
Coated seeds are larger and can be sown with precision, even when you are new to gardening.
Botanically, Petunia Superbissima Cerny's Triumph belongs to the Solanaceae family. It is a Petunia × atkinsiana (or Petunia × hybrida), from the grandiflora group, of the Superbissima horticultural series. It is an artificial hybrid between Petunia axillaris and Petunia inflata, two South American species. The Superbissima range brings together heritage varieties with very large flowers, deeply wavy and frilled.
The Cerny's Triumph selection, linked to the work of the Czech house Černý Seed, is tetraploid: its single or double flowers commonly reach 12 to 16cm in diameter. They have thick, heavily crinkled petals surrounding a dark, strongly veined throat. Each plant forms a bushy clump, at first somewhat upright then rounded, with supple stems that are weakly branching, which thicken well if you pinch out the young shoots. The medium green to light green foliage is formed of ovate, slightly downy leaves, a few centimetres long. The flowers, shaped like a greatly widened funnel, exude a light, sweet fragrance, more noticeable in warm weather, and are visited by many pollinating insects.
Petunias of the Superbissima type are sometimes used as edible flowers to colour syrups or decorate desserts and drinks, due to the almost unreal shades of purple in their petals.
In the garden, this petunia is used at the front of sunny borders, as a low edging or in small groups near the terrace. In a pot, it can be planted in a deep window box or a bowl. You can pair Superbissima Cerny's Triumph with the almost black foliage of Morning Glory 'Illusion Midnight Lace' and a few clumps of Holcus mollis 'Albovariegatus' with its variegated leaves. In a herbaceous border, it will pair well with Sage 'Gogo Purple' or Diascia barberae 'Rose Queen'.

Planting and care
Sow Petunia Superbissima Cerny's Triumph seeds from February to April on the surface of a good seed compost and press down gently. Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the seed tray in a propagator (or seal it inside a polythene bag) or near a radiator, at a temperature of 21 to 25 °C. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which typically takes 10 to 21 days.
Once the young Petunia plants are large enough to handle, prick them out. Gradually harden off the young plants to cooler conditions until they are sturdy enough to be planted outdoors, once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant into well-drained soil at a spacing of 30cm, or grow them in pots or window boxes.
