Very beautiful flower with delicate colours that blend well with love-in-a-mist and blue, pink, and white larkspurs.

Description

The 'Colour Champagne and Roses' California Poppy, known by its Latin name Eschscholzia californica, is a hardy annual plant that is very easy to grow. Its crumpled, single flowers bloom abundantly from June to September, displaying various colours from creamy white to soft pinks and even red.

Its melliferous flowers attract bees and hoverflies to your garden, providing an undeniable ecological benefit.

The California Poppy gets its common name from the resemblance of its open flowers to those of its Poppy and Corn Poppy cousins, as well as its origin in the American West. This California Corn Poppy features graceful, slightly crumpled "paper flowers" that perfectly complement a pastel-themed flowerbed.

Picking its flowers will allow you to create tender, short-lived bouquets with vibrant colours.

Due to its small size (25 cm (10in) tall and wide), the California Poppy is typically used at the front of flowerbeds, in rock gardens, or in pots on the terrace. It readily self-seeds and forms beautiful, natural-looking flowerbeds year after year.

It can tolerate all types of soil, even dry and poor, but prefers light soils over heavy ones. Full sun exposure will promote its flowering.

Planting and care

Sow California poppy from March to May directly in place in rows spaced 15cm (6in) apart. Cover the seeds regularly with 1cm (0in) of fine soil and water. The seeds will germinate in 5 to 10 days. When the young plants are strong enough, you can thin out your sowing by transplanting some seedlings 15cm (6in) apart. Repeat your sowings every 15 days from March to May to ensure regular and abundant flowering from June to September. By sowing under cover in February at 15-20°C (59-68°F), you can obtain young plants ready to be transplanted after the last frost and have the first flowering as early as May.
