Reseda luteola seeds - Weld

Reseda luteola, better known as Weld or Dyer's Rocket, is a dye plant and nectar-rich plant native to Southern and Western Europe. It is still used to obtain a very strong bright yellow dye. A useful plant, of interest in a naturalistic garden, Dyer's Weed is also valued for its slender summer flowering and its ability to adapt to various environments.

Reseda luteola, also known as Yellow Weld, Weld, Dyer's Rocket, Dyer's Weed, Yellow Weed or Yellow Mignonette, belongs to the Resedaceae family. Native to temperate regions of Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa, this species is found notably in Egypt and Libya, the Iberian Peninsula, Italy, and the Balkans. It is also present in the Middle East, from Turkey to Iran, and in Pakistan. It grows in diverse habitats, from arid plains to rocky hills, where it adapts to local conditions.

Dyer's Rocket is a biennial or perennial herbaceous plant depending on climatic conditions, with a lifespan of 2 to 4 years. The plant has an erect habit, with slender and branched stems that can reach 1m to 1.5m in height. Its foliage consists of narrow, elongated, medium green leaves, slightly toothed along the edges. The vegetation emerges in spring and dries up in late autumn. Flowering, occurring from June to September-October, consists of small greenish-yellow flowers, clustered in long, slender upright spikes. These flowers are small but numerous, giving a light and airy texture to the plant as a whole. The fruits following flowering are elongated capsules containing small black seeds. Dyer's Rocket is a fast-growing plant that thrives in poor, dry soils. It prefers sunny exposures and can tolerate frosts of around -15°C. When conditions are suitable, it can self-seed in the garden.

Reseda luteola fits well in a garden of useful plants or in a rustic border. Its vertical silhouette and discreet floral spikes add a touch of lightness to large borders and wild gardens.
