Description

The mixture of Old Sweet Scent Sweet Peas or Lathyrus odoratus is composed of climbing annual plants with large growth (200 to 250 cm) with multicolored flowers that stand out for their abundant flowering and strong scent. Created by the greatest horticulturists between the years 1700 and 1900, these varieties are still references today for their fragrance qualities.

The large seeds of Old Sweet Scent Sweet Peas are easy to sow and require little care. It is an ideal seed to introduce children to gardening.
Combine these varieties with other climbing flowers such as Nasturtiums or Morning Glories. Find all our ideas for combinations in the "ideas / inspiration" section.

These Scented Vetches are perfect for flowering a trellis, a fence, or even a pot on the terrace throughout the summer.

With rapid growth, the stems develop tendrils that attach themselves to the support you provide.

Their papilionaceous flowers, 3 to 4 cm (1.2 - 1.6 in) long, appear from June to September in clusters of 3 to 4 flowers at the ends of short stems. Sweet Peas are excellent cut flowers for creating highly scented bouquets.

Native to southern Italy and Sicily, Scented Vetches thrive in warm and sunny locations with well-drained, even rocky soil.

Planting and care

Before sowing them, let the seeds soak in a bowl of water for 6 hours. This will improve the germination speed. Sow the Sweet Peas directly in place at the base of a trellis in March-April, in small holes (group of 2 or 3 seeds) at a depth of 2.5 cm (1 in). Leave a minimum distance of 30 cm (11.8 in) between two holes. When the seedlings have reached the stage of the second pair of leaves, trim the end of each stem to encourage branching. Regular but not excessive watering will accelerate its growth. A sunny location, a supply of fertilizer for flowering plants, and the removal of faded flowers will promote abundant flowering from June to August. Beware of snails and slugs that love to devour young plants.
