Description

The 'Little Red Riding Hood' Sweet Pea or Lathyrus odoratus is an annual climbing plant with a tall habit (150 to 250 cm (59 to 98in)) that stands out for its abundant bicoloured flowering in shades of pinkish-purple and white, delicately fragrant.

Its papilionaceous flowers, measuring 2 to 3 cm (1in) long, appear from June to late August in clusters of 3 to 4 flowers, at the ends of short stems. Despite its short stems, it is an excellent flower for cutting and creating fragrant bouquets.

With rapid growth, the stems develop tendrils that can cling to a support that you provide.

Originally from Italy, sweet peas thrive in warm, sunny locations with well-drained, even rocky soil.

This fragrant sweet vetch is perfect for adorning trellises, fences, and even pots on the terrace throughout the summer. The large seeds of the 'Little Red Riding Hood' Sweet Pea are easy to sow and require little care. Pair this variety with bicoloured flowers with a variety like 'Prince of Orange'.

Planting and care

Sow Sweet Peas directly in place at the base of a trellis in March-April, in groups of 2 or 3 seeds, at a depth of 2.5 cm (1in). Leave a minimum distance of 30 cm (12in) between two groups. When the seedlings have reached the stage of the second pair of leaves, cut the tip of each stem to promote branching. Regular but not excessive watering will accelerate its growth. A sunny location and the application of flowering plant fertiliser, as well as the removal of faded flowers, will promote abundant flowering from June to August.
