Description

The Petunia 'Baby Gioconda Mixed' is a particularly resistant variety of petunia. It is covered with a profusion of bright flowers from June to the first frosts, in a magnificent range of colours. Its compact habit is perfect for borders, flower beds, and for growing in pots and hanging baskets.

This plant is highly appreciated for its ornamental value, thanks to its generous flowering and long-lasting nature.

The Petunia 'Baby Gioconda Mixed' has a compact habit, reaching a height of 20 cm (8in) and a width of 60 cm (24in). You can plant it in your garden as a border or within a flower bed, or you can grow it in a pot, flower box, or hanging basket where it will look stunning on its own or paired with Angelonia, Verveine Vepita, Dichondra, or even with Holcus mollis for a modern and contrasting effect.

Originating from South America and belonging to the Solanaceae family (just like ornamental tobacco and... potatoes!), Petunia, or Petunia x hybrida, is an annual herbaceous plant. It bears charming bell-shaped flowers on elongating stems, with the size and colour varying depending on the variety. Its leaves are slightly pubescent, with smooth edges and a dark green. It starts flowering in June and continues until the first frost.

Petunias thrive in sunny and sheltered positions. Plant them in rich, light, and well-drained soil or substrate. They are easy to grow, but they require plenty of water.

To encourage and support their long flowering period, it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers and provide them, especially in pots and flower boxes, with a potassium-rich fertiliser that will promote the emergence of new flowers.

Attention: these seeds are reserved for highly experienced gardeners used to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust and barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow petunias from February to April on the surface of good seed compost and gently firm. Lightly cover the seeds with a fine layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the tray in a propagator (or enclose it in a polyethene bag) or on top of a radiator at a temperature of 21 to 25°C (69.8 to 77°F). Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Light aids germination, which usually takes 10 to 21 days.

When the young petunia plants are large enough to handle, proceed with transplantation. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant them into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm (12in) or grow them in pots or containers.
