Description

The Petunia 'Sophistica Blue Morn' is a new variety of petunia covered in a profusion of flowers from June to the first frost, with a beautiful violet-blue colour punctuated by a yellow centre. It looks just as stunning on a balcony as in a garden.

This highly valued ornamental plant is appreciated for both its generosity and the length of its flowering period.

The Petunia Sophistica Blue Morn has a compact habit, reaching a height of 30 cm (12in) and a width of 35 cm (14in). It can be planted in borders, flower beds, or pots, where it will shine on its own or accompanied by Fragrant Alyssum, Mealy Cup Sage, Ornamental Tobacco, or Variegated Creeping Soft Grass for a modern and contrasting effect.

Originating from South America and belonging to the Solanaceae family (like Ornamental Tobacco and... potatoes!), Petunia, or Petunia x hybrida, is an annual herbaceous plant. It produces charming bell-shaped flowers on elongated stems, varying in size and colour depending on the variety. Its leaves are slightly pubescent, with smooth edges and dark green. It starts flowering as early as June and continues until the first frost.

Petunias thrive in sunny and wind-sheltered locations. They prefer rich, light, and well-drained soil or substrate. They are easy to grow but require a lot of water.

To encourage and support its long flowering period, it is important to regularly remove faded flowers and provide a potassium-rich fertiliser, especially for potted plants, to promote the appearance of new flowers.

Attention, seeds reserved for highly experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust and barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow petunias on a good sowing compost surface from February to April and press gently. Cover the seeds lightly with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the bowl in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or above a radiator at a temperature of 21 to 25°C. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Light facilitates germination, which generally takes 10 to 21 days.

Once the young petunia plants are large enough to handle, transplant them. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be moved outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant them into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm or grow them in pots or window boxes.
