Description

The Petunia 'Sparklers' is a very unusual variety due to the shape of its flowers: perfect stars, in a harmonious mix of colours, which will bloom from June to the first frost. Guaranteed originality in pots and hanging baskets.

It is a highly appreciated plant of great ornamental value, which owes its success to its generosity and flowering duration.

The Petunia 'Sparklers' has a compact habit, reaching a height of 30 cm (12in) and a width of 35 cm (14in). Its leaves also differ from classic petunias, being more pointed than rounded, just like the petals. This original petunia is available in a mix, in a beautiful range of slightly pinkish white, pink, mauve, and violet. You can plant it in your garden, in borders or within a flowerbed, or even in a pot, hanging basket, or suspended container where it will look wonderful on its own or accompanied by Verveine Vepita, Diascia, or Ivy.

Originating from South America and belonging to the Solanaceae family (like Ornamental Tobacco and... potatoes!), petunia, or Petunia x hybrida, is an annual herbaceous plant. It bears charming bell-shaped flowers on elongated stems, varying in size and colour depending on the varieties. Its leaves are slightly pubescent, with smooth edges and dark green. Its flowering begins in June and lasts until the first frost.

Petunia thrives in sunny and sheltered locations. It should be planted in rich, light, and well-drained soil or substrate. It is an easy plant to grow but requires plenty of water.

To encourage and support its long flowering period, it is advisable to regularly remove faded flowers and provide a potassium-rich fertiliser, especially in pots and hanging baskets, to promote the emergence of new flowers.

Attention: seeds are reserved for highly experienced gardeners accustomed to sowing very fine seeds. These seeds are as fine as dust and barely visible to the naked eye.

Planting and care

Sow petunias on a good sowing compost surface from February to April and press gently. Cover the seeds lightly with a thin layer of vermiculite or sieved compost. Place the bowl in a propagator (or enclose it in a polythene bag) or above a radiator at a temperature of 21 to 25°C. Keep the soil moist but not soggy. Light facilitates germination, which generally takes 10 to 21 days.

Once the young petunia plants are large enough to handle, transplant them. Gradually acclimatise the plants to cooler conditions until they are strong enough to be moved outdoors once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant them into well-drained soil at a distance of 30 cm or grow them in pots or window boxes.
