A small drought-resistant annual plant, as evidenced by its succulent foliage. It forms a spreading and dense cushion that blooms all summer, in the form of bright pink cup-shaped flowers with a yellow heart. The corollas open early in the morning and late into the evening. Very easy to grow in the sun, ideal as ground cover, in rockeries, dry slopes, but also in small hanging baskets and planters.

Description

The Portulaca 'Pazzaz Nano Hot Pink' is a particularly compact and floriferous selection of Portulaca oleracea, which works wonders in summer compositions. It is a small annual plant with succulent foliage, resistant to drought and not demanding in terms of soil, really easy to succeed. This variety offers pretty, fully open pink flowers with a golden heart from spring to summer. Perfect as ground cover, in rockeries, but also in small hanging baskets and pots.

The Portulaca oleracea 'Pazzaz Nano Hot Pink' belongs to the purslane family. Its ancestor, the common purslane, is a herbaceous annual plant very common in gardens, especially in hot places and in degraded or very compact soil, particularly dry in summer. It is found especially in the South of France and throughout the Mediterranean basin. The varieties of the 'Pazzaz Nano' series have been selected for their increased floribundity, their larger and more colourful flowers remaining fully open from morning until evening, as well as their particularly compact habit.

This 'Pazzaz Nano Hot Pink' portulaca quickly forms a prostrate clump of creeping and branched stems, not exceeding 10 cm (4in) in height and 40 cm (16in) in spread. The green stems bear small, elongated, lanceolate and fleshy leaves, of a bright green hue, sometimes edged with copper tones. The flowering is renewed from late spring until September. The 3-4 cm (1-2in) diameter flowers are composed of crumpled petals like silk. Their colour is a warm and vibrant pink with hints of orange. A sunny exposure is required for them to fully open.

Install the 'Pazzaz Nano Hot Pink' Purslane in rockeries, borders, hanging baskets or pots, alone or in combination with other annual flowers. In large masses or as small touches, this plant, so undemanding and cheerful, will liven up any sunny corner without requiring much attention. This dense and semi-creeping plant is a good ground cover, to be installed in borders and flower beds in the company of plants adapted to dry soil, such as dwarf artemisias, love-in-a-mist, thyme, Californian poppies and sedums, for example.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost has been definitively removed.

Planting and care

Install the young plants of annual purslane in pots in April or in the ground in May. Respect a spacing of 25 cm (10in) between the plants. Choose a very sunny location, in a hot exposure, in a light soil, even sandy, well watered and free of weeds. Regular watering and fertilizing during the season are necessary when the plants are grown in pots, containers, hanging baskets, and garden planters.
