Description

Bidens Beedance Painted Red is a brand-new variety of hybrid bidens with a compact habit, boasting a remarkably long and abundant flowering period from May to October. The tireless plant produces small daisy-like flower heads with a honey fragrance. They boast a yellow central zone bordered in red. A unique variety, which requires little maintenance and tolerates heat and occasional drought. This perennial is not very hardy so is usually cultivated as an annual. Plant it in the sun, in well-drained soil that is not too dry. Ideal in borders, rock gardens, or in containers.

Bidens are semi-hardy plants in very mild climates. They belong to the Asteraceae family, and are closely related to cosmos. The genus includes nearly 200 annual, perennial, undershrub, and bush species generally grown as annuals in our climates. Beedance Painted Red is part of a new line of hybrid plants selected for their endless flowering and compact habit. It is not long-lived, but its growth is rapid. The plant forms a light, low, and rounded clump, made up of branched and leafy stems, reaching a height and width of 25 to 35cm (10 to 14in). Its long flowering begins in May-June and only ends with the first autumn frosts. The plant produces flowers arranged in heads, reaching 3 to 4cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, carried by slender axillary peduncles, and composed of 7 bicoloured petals in yellow and red, arranged around a golden yellow centre. The colour evolves according to the temperatures: the hotter it is, the more yellow there is, and vice versa. This flowering is remarkably honey-rich. The decorative foliage is evergreen in mild climates. It consists of small, vibrant deep green leaves divided into narrow linear segments.

Bidens grow very quickly and produce many flowers. They are undemanding in terms of water and are particularly suitable for growing in pots, hanging baskets, rock gardens, or summer borders. They happily coexist with other annuals such as blue lobelia, bacopa, and diascia, allowing for multiple colour combinations. For example, Bidens Beedance Painted Red pairs beautifully with its brother Painted Yellow (yellow striped with red), red balcony geraniums, surfinias, supertunias, or petunias in shades of mauve or purple, or even with salvias offering blue flowers.

Note: please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14C° (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

Plant in open ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in open ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (bidens tolerate a light late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant in a sunny position. They need light and humus-rich soil that is not too chalky, but above all well-drained. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They perish in constantly waterlogged soil. Highly floriferous and with rapid growth, they are greedy. We advise you to feed them with liquid fertiliser during the growing season. They are fragile perennials which are usually grown as annuals. You can prolong their flowering by bringing them indoors before the first cold weather in autumn and winter.
