Bidens Stoplight®
Beggartick
Long starting, potted to allow the young plant to grow, some were placed in the open ground where they became very generous, those potted had few flowerings, barely grown.

Description
The Bidens 'Stoplight' is a hybrid variety of Bidens, a new generation, characterised by a very compact and well-groomed appearance, and endless flowering of intense vivacity. This vigorous plant produces small heads resembling miniature cherry pink dahlias displaying very vivid and shiny petals. This not very hardy perennial plant is grown as an annual, in sunny, well-drained, not too dry soil. A spectacular variety in flower beds, rockeries, or flower pots.
Bidens are semi-hardy plants in very mild climates. They belong to the Asteraceae family and are closely related to Cosmos. The genus includes nearly 200 species, annuals, perennials, undershrubs, and shrubs generally grown as annuals in our climates. The result of over 10 years' research, the 'Stoplight' variety is part of a new line of hybrid plants selected for their endless flowering and very compact habit. While the Bidens 'Stoplight' is quite short-lived, it grows very fast. The plant forms a dense, low, and rounded clump, consisting of branched and leafy stems, 20 to 30 cm (8 in to 1 ft) tall and wide. Its long flowering begins in May-June and only ends with the first frosts of autumn. The plant offers flowers arranged in heads, reaching 3 to 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter, carried by thin axillary peduncles, and composed of 7 bicolored petals arranged around a golden yellow center. This flowering is remarkably nectar-rich. The foliage, coarser than that of yellow varieties, evergreen in mild climates, consists of small leaves divided into 3 toothed leaflets, a very vivid deep green.
Bidens grow very fast and are very floriferous. Not demanding in water, they are particularly suitable for growing in pots, hanging baskets, rockeries, or summer flower beds. They happily coexist with other annuals such as blue Lobelia, bacopa, and diascia, allowing for multiple colour combinations. For example, Bidens Spotlight pairs perfectly with red or white balcony geraniums, surfinias, supertunias, or petunias in white or blue tones, or with salvias offering blue flowers.
Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care
You can plant your Bidens in open ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in open ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Bidens tolerate light late frosts). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your Bidens in a sunny position. They need a light and humus-rich, not too chalky, but above all well-drained soil. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They will perish in soil that is constantly waterlogged. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors before the first frosts, you can prolong their flowering during autumn and winter.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
