Description

The Bidens ferulifolia 'Yellow Charm' is a luxuriant variety, distinguished by its abundant flowering and vigorous and compact growth. The plant is covered from summer to frost with a multitude of bright, golden yellow, 8-petal flowers resembling small sunflowers, with a slight honey scent. They cluster on beautiful fern-like bright green foliage. The both bushy and spreading habit of this plant works wonders as ground cover in borders, rockeries or in flower pots. This less hardy perennial is grown as an annual in sunny positions, in moist but well-drained soil.

The Bidens ferulifolia, also known as Bidens with fern-like leaves, is an evergreen annual (semi-hardy in very mild climates) plant from the Aster family, native to Mexico and Arizona. Its lifespan is short but its growth is very rapid. The 'Yellow Charm' variety forms a beautiful cushion of leafy stems reaching a height of 30 to 40 cm (11.8 - 15.7 in) and a minimum width of 40 cm (15.7 in). Its long flowering period starts in June and only ends with the first autumn frosts. The plant produces large flowers, reaching 5 cm (2 in) in diameter, carried on slender axillary peduncles, and composed of 8 golden yellow petals arranged around a yellow center that turns brownish on reaching maturity. The blooms emit a light scent reminiscent of honey. The very dense and particularly decorative vibrant green foliage consists of small leaves divided into very narrow linear segments.

Bidens grow very fast and are highly floriferous. They are not demanding in terms of water and are particularly suitable for cultivation in pots, hanging baskets, rockeries, or summer borders. They happily coexist with other annuals such as Lobelia, Bacopa, and Diascia, allowing for multiple colour combinations. They for example mix perfectly with red trailing geraniums, Surfinia, or Petunias in shades of purple, or with blue Salvias.

Green plants measuring 4 to 8 cm (1.6 - 3.1 in) in trays of 5 small plugs of 2.8 cm (0.8 in) in diameter and a height of 4 cm (1.6 in). Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in open ground.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your 'Bidens ferulifolia Yellow Charm' in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (Bidens can tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your Bidens in a sunny position. They need a light and humus-rich, not too chalky, but above all well-drained soil. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They will perish in constantly waterlogged soil. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser during the growing season. Usually grown as annuals, they are actually fragile perennials: by bringing them indoors before the first cold weather, you can prolong their flowering during autumn and winter.
