More information

This lovely geranium combines abundant and prolonged flowering with aromatic foliage that, according to its creator, has repellent properties against mosquitoes. The plant produces countless small flowers, mostly bicoloured, with dark purple petals edged in white, on astonishingly fragrant foliage that evokes the scent of lemongrass. Its bushy and upright habit is ideal for flowering pots, providing a permanent decoration for outdoor or conservatory spaces.

Description

This Geranium or Pelargonium 'Mosquitaway Nova' is a version with more contrasting flowers than its sister 'Eva'. The latest addition to the Mosquitaway series, this variety with fragrant foliage also offers abundant flowering, a quality that is generally lacking in aromatic-leaved pelargoniums. From early summer until the first frost, its countless small single flowers, dark purple and white, overwhelm a foliage with a lemony scent that is said to repel mosquitoes. In any case, it presents itself well with its bushy and well-groomed appearance and its very pretty flowering, allowing for a permanent decoration outdoors or in the veranda. Another delicious and easy-to-grow pelargonium that one needs to protect from frost to find it intact in spring.

Florist's pelargoniums are perennial hybrids of the geranium family, in a large group called Pelargonium x domesticum. They are mostly derived from Pelargonium cucullatum, native to the southwest of the Cape Province in South Africa, with the contribution of various wild species. The group of 'Angel' type geraniums, which emerged in the 1930s, brings together plants resulting from various crosses between Pelargonium crispum (with aromatic foliage) and florist's pelargoniums, which are highly floriferous. The Mosquitaway geranium, which is part of this group of hybrids, is a very recent variety that combines many qualities. It comes in several varieties, including 'Megan', 'Louise', 'Nova', 'Eva' and 'Lizzy'. The plant forms a bushy and dense clump with a compact habit and medium growth, reaching about 35 cm (14in) in height and 30 cm (12in) in width. It produces a mass of single flowers from June to October. In 'Nova', each flower consists of two dark purple velvety upper petals bordered with white, and three lower petals that are white-pink with a small purple spot. Its succulent stems bear small, round, thick, lobed leaves with deep veins, in a light green colour. Their scent resembles that of lemon.

Florist's geraniums provide lasting and cheerful decorations throughout the summer. They prefer semi-shaded positions and coolness. These plants tolerate a lack of light quite well, which allows them to be associated with hostas, ferns, impatiens, lobelias in incredible blues, or begonias. Create magnificent pots and hanging baskets by combining colours and foliage, either solid or variegated. The 'Mosquitaway Nova' variety can be a magnificent specimen in a veranda or in the house, throughout the year, especially when flowering is rare, in winter.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under shelter (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once the risk of frost has definitively passed.

Planting and care

'Mosquitaway' florist geraniums thrive in fertile, well-drained, neutral to limestone soils, well-prepared and in partial shade. Geraniums are greedy plants that require regular fertiliser inputs to give the best of themselves.

You can plant pelargoniums from March-April in mild climate regions, but you will need to bring them indoors in case of frost. To avoid taking risks, wait until the end of frost to place them outside, usually around May in the North. When planting in pots or flower boxes, use special geranium compost.

In the garden, wait until the end of April, or even mid-May in the northernmost regions, to plant them in the ground and provide a special geranium growing support for your soil.
