Like my previous orders, this one arrived very quickly. I received some lovely little petunia plants which I immediately transplanted into pots to prepare them for their final placement in about three weeks' time. As usual, I am very satisfied with my order from "Promesse de Fleurs".

Description

Petunia Double Pirouette Rose is a new variety of double-flowered Petunia hybrid that is quite impressive. It is a robust, ball-shaped plant that holds up well and is covered from June to the first frost with very double and frilly bicoloured flowers which are among the most unique in the world of petunias. They are fragrant and remarkably coloured, with wide borders of pink and white, stunning in the garden, lovely in flower beds, borders, large pots, and flower boxes. This annual plant is easily grown in the sun, in good garden soil.

Our hybrid petunias are all derived from several plants native to the warm regions of South America. Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family, it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. The 'Double Pirouette Rose' hybrid quickly forms a dense and spreading clump, 35 cm (14in) tall and 30 cm (12in) in diameter, with a fairly round shape. The plant blooms from June to October, provided faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fed. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are very double, and fragrant. They are adorned with contrasting colours, dark pink, dark pink-red, or bright pink, with wide white borders. The petals' edges are frilly and the flower's centre is invisible. The vigorous and healthy, dark green leaves are hairy with entire edges.

No other annual flowering plant has been subjected to such extensive selection by breeders. The results are impressive and petunias rival pelargoniums in splendour and length of flowering, as demonstrated by this Pirouette variety. Plant them in large pots or hanging baskets with geraniums, lobelias, nemophila, etc... You can also plant them in flower beds to edge borders of plants with grey foliage such as caryopteris, cineraria maritima, or artemisia.

Note: our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous with rapid growth and hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves  to keep them looking attractive and extend the flowering period.
