Brilliant. It just required some patience because at first the plant develops slowly. But then it continuously produces new trailing flowers.

Description

Petunia Surfinia 'Hot Pink' has a unique, compact and trailing habit which gives this annual plant excellent durability, even in hot and rainy conditions. It is adorned with hundreds of single, funnel-shaped, hot pink flowers. Its unmatched flowering, from spring to autumn, and its beautiful cascading effect make it naturally suitable for hanging baskets.

Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or frost-tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to warm regions of South America. The Surfinia Petunia is a relatively recent sterile hybrid with a trailing habit, making it a stunning plant for hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also known for its beautiful and long-lasting flowering.

Petunia Surfinia 'Hot Pink' forms a bushy trailing clump, reaching 25 cm (10in) high and 35 cm (14in) in diameter. The plant flowers from June to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fed. Its medium-sized, cup-shaped flowers are hot pink with a deep pink throat, adorned with fine veins of the same tone and tightly packed together on dense foliage. The small centre of the corolla is marked with green. The vigorous and healthy, dark green foliage is quite hairy and the leaves have entire edges. This variety has an exceptional habit and tolerates heat well.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias compete with geraniums in terms of splendour and duration of flowering, as demonstrated by this Surfinia Hot Pink variety. Plant it in large pots or hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with the dark blue Surfinia Petunia. You can also plant it in borders to edge grey-foliaged plants such as cerastiums, silver ragworts, or artemisias. If you want it to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of grey-foliaged plants like Nepeta faassenii or pastel-coloured annual poppies.

Supplied as growing plants measuring 4 to 8 cm (2 to 3in) 5 small plugs, each measuring 2.8 cm (1in) in diameter and 4 cm (2in) in height, individually labelled. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-bearing, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of their growth as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous, rapidly growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear, to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
