Description

The Petunia Surfinia Purple forms a mass of flowering stems that can sometimes exceed 1 metre (3.3 feet) in length. It has a unique habit, both compact, upright and trailing, which shows excellent resistance to bad weather. It offers hundreds of single funnel-shaped flowers, pinkish-purple in colour, reminiscent of four o'clocks, intensely coloured. Its unparalleled floribundance, from May until frost, as well as its beautiful heat resistance naturally make it suitable for hanging baskets. This generous annual plant is easy to grow, everywhere, almost maintenance-free!

The Petunia belongs to the Solanaceae family; it is closely related to ornamental tobacco, for example, and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals, and all originate from the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia® Petunia is a relatively new sterile hybrid of petunia, with a trailing and weeping habit, rather than an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant in hanging baskets. It was created in Japan, and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

The Petunia Surfinia 'Purple' forms a vigorous bushy and trailing clump, with trailing stems ranging from 90 cm (35.4 in) to 1 m (3.3 ft) in height. The plant is in bloom from May-June to October, provided that faded flowers are regularly removed and it is regularly fertilised. Its cup-shaped flowers are medium-sized, with a bright pink-purple colour, tightly packed together on dense foliage. The centre of the flower is dark purple in colour. The leaves, quite downy, are ovate and pointed, with entire edges and a dark green colour, vigorous and healthy. This variety shows an exceptional habit and does not require pruning as its faded flowers remove themselves.

No other annual flowering plant has undergone such intense selection by breeders for such a long period of time. The results are impressive, as petunias compete with geraniums for the splendour and length of their flowering, as evidenced by this Surfinia Purple variety. Install it in large pots, or in hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with pure white Surfinia Petunia. You can also plant it in borders, to punctuate them with grey foliage plants such as cerastiums, cineraria maritima or artemisias. If you want to stand out, plant several plants to create an original ground cover at the base of grey foliage plants such as Nepeta faassenii or annual poppies in pastel colours.

Green plants measuring 4 to 8cm (1.6 - 3.1 in) in trays of 5 small plugs measuring 2.8 cm (0.8 in) in diameter and 4 cm (1.6 in) in height, labelled separately. Our plants are at least eight weeks old and are strong enough to be planted in the ground.

Note: Please be aware that our young plants in small plugs are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias can tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need a light and humus-bearing soil, but above all well-draining. Do not water them too much at the beginning of vegetation as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well, but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and of rapid growth, they are hungry. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for surfinia petunias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and prolong flowering.
