Description

Petunia Surfinia Sweet Pink is a vigorous variety, with a unique compact and trailing habit and excellent resistance to bad weather. This petunia produces a multitude of large, single, funnel-shaped flowers with a very light pink colour, slightly veined with a darker pink. Its trailing habit, which is always in bloom, and its beautiful heat resistance make it the queen of hanging baskets. An easy flower to grow that requires little maintenance!

Petunia belongs to the solanaceae family; it is related to ornamental tobacco and its foliage also contains alkaloids. These annual, biennial, or tender perennial plants are mostly grown as annuals and are all native to the warm regions of South America. The Surfinia Petunia is a relatively recent sterile hybrid, with a trailing, weeping habit rather than an upright one, which makes it a magnificent plant for hanging baskets. It was created in Japan and is also distinguished by its beautiful and very long flowering period.

Petunia Surfinia 'Sweet Pink' forms a vigorous, dense, trailing clump, with creeping, downy stems cascading over 60 to 90 cm (24 to 35in). The plant is in bloom from May-June to October, provided it is regularly fed and watered. Its large, cup-shaped flowers are about 6 cm (2in) in diameter, pink with shades of mauve, streaked with dark veins and centred on a very dark purple throat. They nestle against each other on dense, vigorous and healthy foliage. The hairy, dark green leaves are ovate and pointed, with entire margins. This variety has an exceptional habit and requires very little maintenance, as its sterile flowers fall naturally.

No other annual flowering plant has been subjected to such intense selection by breeders for such a long period. The results are impressive and petunias rival geraniums in terms of splendour and length of flowering, as evidenced by this Surfinia Pink Vein variety. plant it in large pots or hanging baskets, creating a perfect contrast with Surfinia Sky Blue or Purple petunia varieties. You can also plant it in borders, to edge grey foliage plants such as Cineraria, Sea Holly, or Wormwood. If you want it to stand out, plant several to create an original ground cover at the base of grey foliage plants such as Faassen's Catmint or pastel-coloured annual poppies.

Note: Attention, our plug plants are products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before being planted outdoors once all risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your petunias in the ground or in a pot. If you want to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed (surfinia petunias tolerate a small late frost). In the meantime, you can grow them on in a pot in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Plant your petunias in a sunny location sheltered from the wind. They need light and humus-rich, well-draining soil. Do not water them too much at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excess moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. They are floriferous and fast-growing, hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear, to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
