Description

The 'Belarina Purple Dawn' double Primrose has  mini-rose shaped, double, brightly coloured flowers, with purple petals speckled with white. They bloom in generous clusters on dense and compact foliage that often persists in winter. These lovely double Belarina primroses, which are very perennial, excel in pots, flower beds, and borders. Offering a multitude of colours and a burst of optimism at the end of winter, they even grow in shade and flower for a long time.

Primula vulgaris (acaulis) Belarina Purple Dawn is a herbaceous perennial plant in the primula family, derived from the common primrose commonly found in meadows and woodlands. It is part of a series of recent cultivars that stand out for their double corollas, vibrant colours, and extended flowering period. They are floriferous and hardy plants that form pretty, dense clumps of foliage, reaching heights of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and widths of 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in). They develop rosettes of textured and veined leaves, which remain evergreen in winter. 'Belarina Purple Dawn' produces flowers measuring 3 to 4 cm (1 to 2in) in diameter, appearing for 4 to 5 weeks. They are very double, numerous, and arranged in perfect clusters. They are beautiful, but also slightly fragrant, and carried by short villous peduncles surrounded by lush foliage.

Garden primroses are perennial plants grown as biennials. Perfect for pots, flower beds, and borders, and even growing in shade in fertile and moist soil, they deserve a place in all gardens and on all balconies. They announce and precede the return of spring alongside botanical tulips, pansies, horned violets, and forget-me-nots. They are ideal under deciduous trees, in rockeries, and lawns, and they mingle with snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible into pots, flower beds, or directly into borders.

Planting and care

'Belarina Purple Dawn' double primrose plug plants can be planted in containers and flower beds, or directly in well-prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible, preferably in September-October. If the intended location is not yet ready or the conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can let them grow in pots for 4 to 6 weeks.

In containers and flower beds, use a good potting compost for flowering plants (such as geranium potting soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertiliser, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug plant should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and in the following weeks, as the plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful not to overwater! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if there is no rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered location. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, the perennial 'Belarina' primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week when watering the plants. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms. Once the flowering is over, the plants in containers can be replanted in partially shaded areas in the garden.
