Description

This 'Lipstick' Primrose, derived from our perennial and native Primula acaulis, stands out with its naturally compact habit, forming a small cushion with a very neat appearance, as well as its unprecedented bicolour flowers in pink and yellow. It usually blooms from January to March, on large wavy evergreen leaves, in a vibrant green shade. Often grown as biennials, primroses are perfect in pots, window boxes, borders... These plants thrive in sunny or shady positions, in fertile and moist soil.

The 'Lipstick' Primula vulgaris is a herbaceous biennial plant belonging to the primrose family. It is part of a series of recent cultivars known for their original colours and long flowering period. These are floriferous plants that form dense clumps of foliage in just a few months, reaching a height of 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) and a width of 25 cm (10in). They produce persistent rosettes of wavy and veined leaves in a beautiful vibrant green shade. 'Lipstick' produces medium-sized flowers, 3 cm (1in) in diameter, which last for 7 to 8 weeks. They are extensively bordered in bright pink on a very pale pink to white background, with golden yellow markings in the throat. Arranged in perfect clusters, they are carried by short villous peduncles above luxuriant foliage.

'Lipstick' primroses are versatile, colourful and truly easy to grow. They deserve a place in every garden and on every balcony. Colourful and floriferous, they herald the return of spring. Whether in borders or in window boxes on a balcony, these small plants are ideal companions for tulips, pansies, horned violets and forget-me-nots. Under the cover of deciduous trees, in rockeries and short grass meadows, they mingle among snowdrops and violets. The leaves and flowers are edible and can be consumed raw or cooked.

Properties of primroses:

They are the same as those of the common primrose and the tall primrose: the flowers have soothing and calming properties, and are used in expectorant preparations. The leaves help prevent bruising, and the whole plant (especially the root) has analgesic, anti-spasmodic, diuretic and expectorant properties.

Note: Please be aware that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, window boxes or directly in borders.

Planting and care

The plug plants of Lipstick primroses are planted in pots and containers or directly in the ground in a finely prepared and enriched soil. Plant them as soon as possible after receiving them, in September-October. If the planned location is not yet ready or if conditions are unfavorable for planting, you can grow them in buckets for 4 to 6 weeks.

In pots and containers, use a good potting soil for flowering plants (geranium soil) enriched with clay and slow-release fertilizer, lightweight and well-draining. The top of the plug should be level with the soil. Water generously at planting and during the following weeks, as plug plants can dry out quickly. However, be careful with excess water! Make sure to use containers with drainage holes and empty the saucer 10 minutes after watering. Remember to water even during winter if it doesn't rain or if the container is placed in a sheltered spot. Do not water during freezing periods.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, primroses are hungry plants. As soon as growth resumes, in late February or early March, and throughout the flowering period, apply a liquid fertilizer for flowering plants containing iron and trace elements 1 to 2 times a week with the watering water. Remove faded flowers to promote new blooming. Once flowering is over, potted plants can be replanted in the garden in partial shade.
