Description

Viola cornuta 'Sorbet XP Coconut Swirl' is a next-generation horned violet that is appreciated for its long and vibrant flowering, with a slightly exotic charm. Its small flowers beautifully rimmed in blue-black on a white background bloom early in the season and for many months, on vigorous and bushy young plants with dark green foliage that remains decorative in winter. Horned violets accompany spring bulbs and bloom at the base of asters. They also make charming borders and opulent pots. 'Coconut Swirl' will have a great effect when paired with small yellow several-flowered narcissi.

Belonging to the viola family, the horned violet, which grows wild in the Pyrenees, is a low perennial plant that has given rise to many hybrids. Often crossed with Viola tricolor (wild pansy), their most famous descendants are horticultural pansies. The variety 'Sorbet Xp Coconut Swirl', the latest addition to the Xp series, is a herbaceous carpeting plant 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6in) tall in flower, with dark green, ovate and lobed leaves that form a small dense, spreading tuft. It is covered in flowers from spring to autumn, sometimes taking a summer break if the weather is very hot. Its remarkably bright flowers, pure white widely bordered in ultramarine blue to midnight blue, are highlighted by small violet whiskers radiating from a small bright yellow centre. The flowers are almost shaped like small pansies, but their petals are arranged differently. The top two are upright, the other three are inclined downward.

Horned violets are intended for low flowering borders, but also pots and balconies, where they will be associated with other spring and summer flowering plants. (Forget-me-nots, Dwarf Daffodils, Daisies, Primroses, Botanical Tulips, Lobelia, summer and autumn asters…). The flowers of horned violets are edible, so don't hesitate to decorate your plates with one or two flowers, or even place a few on your salads to add a touch of colour. The magnificent bicolour of this Coconut Swirl variety will balance a composition combining, for example, the unique blue of Xp True Blue, the vibrant orange of Xp Orange Deep or the yellow of Xp Yellow.

Note: Please note that our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant them as soon as possible, in pots, planters or directly in the massif.

Planting and care

Horned violets appreciate a light soil, rich in humus or compost, moist but well-drained as they fear excess moisture in winter. In heavy soil, add some sand to improve drainage.

Plant horned violets in a sunny position but not scorching or under light shade.

Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are greedy plants. Feed them with liquid fertiliser for containers once or twice a week during the growing season. Water regularly but without excess. Remove faded flowers to promote new flowering.
