Disappointed by the quality and lack of freshness of the received plant (which is also the most expensive of the three received clematis). Considering the yellowed labeling, a layer of soil on top of the pot colonized by numerous endemic seedlings from prolonged substrate stagnation, and the almost complete absence of visible stems (even dead ones), it seems that it has been languishing in its pot for over a year without any real growth. I'm not sure if I'll have a guarantee of recovery in the spring. We'll see...

Description

The Clematis Texensis 'Duchess of Albany' is a beautiful climbing clematis, reaching a height of 4m (13ft). It is appreciated for its long summer flowering in the shape of a pale pink tulip with a darker central vein.

This robust "Queen of the vines" develops deciduous leaves with 3 leaflets, oval in shape, dark green, 8cm (3in) long, carried by voluble stems that twine around their support with tendrils. From July to October, beautiful small single flowers with 6 tepals, bell-shaped, pale pink with a darker central vein, 5cm (2in) long, grow on the current year's branches. At the end of flowering, fruits appear topped with a silvery gray feathery style, very decorative.

The Clematis Texensis 'Duchess of Albany' likes a sandy-clay, light, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny position with the base in shade. Plant ground cover plants to achieve this. Watch out for aphids!Plant this Texas Clematis on a bush with golden foliage, to bring a touch of colour contrast. Combine several species of clematis or marry it with a climbing rose!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisation that stimulates foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilt disease.

Planting and care

The Clematis Texensis 'Duchess of Albany' should be planted in spring or autumn at a depth of 8cm (3in), with the root ball placed flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, cut back the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant climb on its own in the future. Pruning will then involve cutting back all the previous year's stems to 25cm (10in) from the ground and above a pair of buds in March.
