Description

The Clematis Texensis 'Gravetye Beauty' is an astonishing climbing clematis 4m (13ft) tall. It has the particularity of flowering in tulip form and then maturing into cherry red stars with brown-red anthers.

This "Queen of Climbers" develops deciduous leaves with three leaflets, ovate, medium to dark green, 8cm (3in) long, carried by voluble stems that twine around their support with tendrils. From June to September, beautiful single tulip-shaped flowers in cherry red with a pink base grow on the current year's branches. At maturity, they fully open to form beautiful stars with six tepals and 7cm (3in) in diameter. At the end of flowering, fruits appear, topped with a silvery grey feathery style, very decorative.

The Clematis Texensis 'Gravetye Beauty' likes a clay-siliceous, light, deep, fresh, and fertile soil, in a sunny position with the base in the shade. Plant ground cover plants to achieve this. It is well-suited for the East. Beware of aphids! Semi-hardy, protect its base against harsh winters.

The Clematis Texensis 'Gravetye Beauty', in a bush with golden foliage, will bring a touch of colour. Combine it with perennials to cover the base, which becomes bare over time.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisation, which stimulates foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to prevent excessive moisture, which favours the disease of wilting.

Planting and care

The Clematis Texensis 'Gravetye Beauty' should be planted in either spring or autumn, at a depth of 8cm (3in). Unlike other plants, the root ball should be laid flat on the soil instead of vertically, with the head in the sun and the foot in the shade. After planting, cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. Initially, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base above a pair of buds, and train them loosely to help the plant cling on its own later. When pruning in March of the following year, cut back all the previous year's stems to 25cm (10in) from the ground and above a pair of buds.
