Our range of Celastrus, climbing spindle trees or bittersweet. These are vigorous climbing plants like Celastrus orbiculatus of which there are male specimens ('Hercules') or female ones ('Diana'). This shrub develops twining stems that can reach up to 12 metres in height, capable of quickly covering a wall, fence, or pergola. Its yellow leaves and red berries provide a remarkable touch of colour in autumn. Celastrus scandens, equally fast-growing, is prized for its two-coloured fruits, in orange capsules opening to reveal a red pearl. 'Autumn Revolution', unlike the species, is self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruits without needing a nearby male plant. Very ornamental, the climbing spindle tree is also beneficial for small wildlife, especially birds and pollinators.

Celastrus appreciates sun and slightly moist, humus-bearing soils, but it tolerates partial shade. Planted in spring or autumn it requires little maintenance, except for regular pruning to control its growth. However, be cautious: its vigour requires a strong support and it can sometimes smother other plants if not kept in check.

You'll adore them!
