The Schizophragmas or false hydrangeas are climbing bushes of the Hydrangeaceae family that cling to their support with powerful climbing roots. Originally from Japan, these plants are similar to climbing hydrangeas and have flat, rounded inflorescences with ivory bracts measuring 20cm (8in) in diameter. The two flagship species are; 'Moonlight', 3 to 4m (10 to 13ft) tall with velvety leaves and 'Rose Sensation', 6 to 10m (20 to 33ft) tall with cream-white flowers which turn pink. The Schizophragmas hydrangeoides grow in rich, fresh, acidic, nourishing soil and a light shade is ideal. False hydrangeas are trained on walls, facades, and tree trunks.

Tip: apply an organic fertilizer based on manure in May/June.
