All our Japanese Wisterias. These climbing plants originate from the vigorous Wisteria floribunda, native to Japanese forests. Their long trailing flower clusters are sometimes even more spectacular than those of Chinese wisterias. These flowers appear in spring, often at the same time as the foliage. The most well-known variety is Wisteria floribunda ‘Macrobotrys’, prized for its pale lilac clusters that can exceed 50 cm long. The 'Hombeni' ('Rosea’, 'Pink Ice') cultivar stands out for its soft pink flowering, a rare colour among wisterias, while ‘Violacea Plena’ ('Black Dragon') captivates with its double pompon-like violet flowers. There is also the variety ‘Shiro Noda’, with its graceful and fragrant white flowers.
Japanese wisterias, or Wisteria floribunda, are highly floriferous climbers that reach 6 to 10 metres in height. Their clusters are generally longer and denser than those of Chinese wisterias, but they appear later. Their stems twine clockwise, unlike Chinese wisterias.
Plant them in full sun, in deep, fertile, and well-drained soil, preferably acidic to neutral. Rigorous pruning is recommended to encourage flowering and control their vigour.
